Folks, While we certainly could have roleplayed a conversation between the new companions regarding combat tactics on their way to the warehouse, I recognize that in-game we all wanted to be able to move things along. That said, Mike has informed Steve C. and me that he's likely to be out the next two weeks, which means that the party will be missing a dedicated frontline melee combatant in the form of Mike's paladin for the next few sessions. So I just wanted to raise everyone's awareness that the group's tactics may shift a few times in these first few sessions. And as we're all really squishy at low levels, IMHO the goal is survival first! As a medium armor cleric, Twitch came in with the assumption that she'd serve as backline ranged support. However, as the party is presently configured, Twitch has the highest AC (AC 18) among any of the current PCs.  Envy and Lukar are lower AC and definitely should stay away from melee. Legion is apparently a dual-wielder and will therefore be close-in, even though his AC is moderate (AC 17). Yipping also has moderate AC (AC 16) and some close-in melee kobold abilities (pack tactics and grovel). For the short term, Yipping may need to move in reasonably close as well to support Legion--granting and gaining advantage could be a huge assist in the short run. While the typical assumption for a cleric is that they should avoid taking damage so that they're in a position to heal others, it looks like Twitch may also need to wade into melee in the short term from time to time. To be honest, Twitch only has two spell slots per long rest at this low level (in the current combat, she's cast one Bless and is holding the other spell slot for an emergency Healing Word), and so there's not much healing she can do at this stage anyway. And as a group, we chose to go into our first encounter without purchasing additional healing--for good or ill--and only have Twitch and Envy who could potentially heal. We don't have a ton of healing on-hand. Given how squishy the party is at low levels, I think it's important that we not overestimate ourselves. In our current conflict, for example, we've prevailed so far but we now appear to be faced with a tougher opponent who has paused before attacking. If we have a way out of combat that avoids exposing us unnecessarily to additional damage ... IMHO it's probably to our advantage to explore that. We can always use game sessions to discuss tactics further, in character or out, but I felt a little guilty as the party cleric to realize that we came into our first combat without a ton of healing on-hand and no clear understanding of our respective combat roles. Thoughts welcomed!
I agree that it is all about survival right now. Yipping can move upfront but I can't remember what I have outside of a dagger and crossbow..The crossbow hits hardest but he can still go upfront, If he lives to lvl 3 then he will be more of a support tank and no longer a range PC. I can't believe we didn't grab any healing potions. :(
haha! I even gave you the gold to do it :) Ahh the memories of level 1 characters.  These initial encounters are all about figuring each other out, and it can be both tricky and dangerous, even if it is otherwise a relatively easy encounter. Some really good points Koop for all of us to keep in mind. Remember, a Tank is not necessarily the highest hit points, but the one who can draw the most attacks. Level 3 will be right around the corner...level 2 will most assuredly be on Thursday.
Yup. To my surprise, for now Twitch is best positioned to be the party's Tank with AC 18 and net total HP of 13 with shifting--and when shifted, she can't be flanked or otherwise have advantage gained against her, either. Not at all what I thought her role would be--by Level 2, I fully expected her to be hiding in mid-combat like a good trickery cleric. Gulp! Plunging into the fray! Hopefully Twitch doesn't go down before using her Healing Word. I definitely do not  feel in my comfort zone as a frontline combatant! I know Ahna doesn't often check in here on the Forum but I'll get word to her to have Envy remember to hold a healing spell in reserve as well. Once we start to level up and add a paladin--with high AC and additional healing--we'll start to get a little more stable on the healing and tanking front. In the meantime, as we've all said-- survival  first. A hero dies but one death--but a coward negotiates, grovels, and slinks away to live a thousand times. If that's not how the saying goes, well, for this group, it probably should. :-)
I agree all the way. It is usually a bad sign when the Cleric is the tank, but I think we may just have to eat it for a little while. To meta explain Legion's combat style, his first turn is comprised of attack from range then closing the distance with melee attacks. Having a little bit of meta knowledge, this enemy Orlando is heralded as "the Invulnerable"  so we probably can't take him at this stage, especially since we are missing our front line. Legion is much less honor focused then Sedriss and doesn't care if we bug out, but he does have a bad past with Orlando and won't be likely to make a deal with him... Ever. I think our best option is to run and attack again another day if needs be.
Defiantly agree Envy should be our healer for this combat, and its better to use the one spell slot I have left to heal everyone! I can use her other fun spells later but for now I'll prioritize making sure the party doesn't die, we just got started and I don't want anyone to get killed off before we have even gotten a chance to get started lol.
