Ben, A quick character note for you and GM Steve C. (and the rest of the party) to consider: Now that the party is second level, we've seen that Legion likes to use the Zephyr Strike  spell. I think you took Cure Wounds  as your second known Ranger spell. If you and Steve C. would consider a ret-con, might I suggest taking Goodberry  instead?  We already have two PCs, Twitch and Envy, who can cast emergency healing in-combat as bonus actions. When Mike's paladin joins us, we'll have another healer who can revive folks with Lay on Hands. But IMHO,  Goodberry  is a crazy-useful spell at low levels because it gives the party the equivalent of 10 emergency healing potions each day that can be distributed amongst the group.  I don't claim to be a D&D tactical expert; that's not really my thing. But in my view, the party should try to maximize action economy and avoid PCs dropping out of combat. Cure Wounds  is worth one heal that Legion must administer himself; but Goodberry  is worth 10 heals that anyone can administer and can get folks revived and back into the fight, if still needing to avoid taking further damage in the short run. I recognize that using Goodberry  would essentially burn one of Legion's spell slots immediately each day . EDIT: No! The Interwebs remind me that Goodberries are good for 24 hours, not a given spell-casting "day." So Legion can cast Goodberry  at the end of a day that he hasn't burned both spell slots, and can start the next day with two slots ready to go. But 10 healing potions per day would cost the group at least 250 gp, and at low levels we're likely to remain cash- and healing-starved. And whereas Zephyr Strike  is good for one +1d8 and freedom of movement for Legion, a batch of Goodberries essentially helps to ensure the party has maximum attacks/buffs/defenses. And of course, those Goodberries can (and may) be used on Legion, too, helping to keep him in the fight as well. I haven't done any Internet research on maximizing a Ranger build or can claim that I know what the "right" spell choices for Rangers might be, but I thought to share that thought and welcome reactions. :-) Koop
A quick addendum.  Goodberry is a very useful spell.  Also, if you have 2 unused spell slots before a long rest, you could create 20 and so on. We also used it in another campaign where food was scarce to avoid using up rations.
Mike, thanks! Good points. In the pre-Tasha's Cauldron and Xanathar's Guide days, I think the conventional wisdom was: (a) rangers are underpowered; and (b) Hunter's Mark is a ranger must-have spell. But my limited understanding is that: (1) the expansion of ranger sub-classes to include Gloom Stalkers and the like have helped to make the class more appealing (I was considering a gloom stalker ranger myself at one point!); and (2) Favored Foe, while not as long-lasting, substitutes reasonably for the Concentration spell Hunter's Mark. Anyway, Ben and Steve: it's all up to you folks, of course--was just a passing thought as it occurred to me that I hadn't looked at the ranger spell list in a very long time.
I am open to whatever you want to do. I believe there is an allowance (in Tasha's) that allows spells to be changed out at every level, so if you want to change it now, or later, that works. I don't want you to end up picking a spell that is ultimately never use, given the limited spells and slots for rangers. Ultimately, the decision is yours.
What steve said is correct I'll change it next level
