Changing Thumbnails for Handouts (without embedding images)

I wish to change the thumbnail images for my handouts from the red sandwich thing to something prettier. I do not however want to have an image in the handout, which is the usual way to do this. So the question is, how do I change the thing circled without putting an image in front of my text?

(I am not really sure what this is officially called though, so may have missed a way of changing it in my searches)

There isn't a way to do that outside of putting the image in the handout. This would be a great suggestion, and something I've also wanted. If you make one, be sure to link it here so I and others can upvote it.

Thanks for the answer - nice to have confirmation that I am trying to work around the impossible rather than just being dim about an option somewhere.

I am very happy to start a suggestion - but as someone who knows the system 100x better than I do, how would you exactly describe what I am asking for and how would it best be written so as to have a better success chance?

I'd probably ask to have a checkbox that toggles the display of the handout avatar allowing the changing of the icon in the journal without showing the avatar as part of the handout body. That should be a very minimal change for the devs.
