Four friends are looking for a long-term DM to run D&D campaigns for us. What we're looking for We're looking for a DM to run a new campaign in the 6PM-10PM or 7PM-11PM timeslot (UK time). The group is comprised of four friends who have known each other for years and played together before. One member of the group is very new to 5e; she will need some mentoring! The other three have played Descent Into Avernus together and know the rules quite well. As a group, we have great chemistry. We want to find somebody who vibes with us. We prefer to play together, without others. We like the sound of a few campaigns: The Wild Beyond The Witchlight and Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos; both sound interesting, though they aren't out yet. We're open to discussing any other 5e campaign, or if you're a talented world builder, we'd consider high fantasy homebrew. It may make sense to start with a one-shot to gauge compatibility. The release date of The Wild Beyond The Witchlight matches well with that. Our perfect DM will... Weave grand tales of heroism and glory in a high fantasy setting. We play D&D to participate in epic, larger-than-life adventures. Our actions should echo through the fabric of the planes! Okay, maybe not right away. But we want to play in a setting where we are free to influence the world. To us, nothing is better than politics and intrigue in a high fantasy world. Our characters may start with nothing but they will grow to have everything. Include deep levels of character tie-in into the story. We love it when the story is tailored to our characters. We will write our characters' backstory, and we would love for you to tie them into the story. Maybe one of the characters, a tiefling, doesn't remember much about her childhood? You might decide that she's a failed experiment by the BBEG to combine bloodlines. Perhaps you reveal this twist in the last session of the campaign. True story - the player didn't know at all until the end, and she loved it! Make NPCs a living and breathing part of the world. A large part of our interaction with the world is through interactions with NPCs. We love it when our DM, through action and dialogue, can make characters come alive. That doesn't mean you need to do voices if you don't want to (though we love that too!). But it would help if you enjoyed roleplaying as and developing the personality of characters in the world. Hold story above combat, but not too far. We play for the story. We want to submerge ourselves in mystery and intrigue. We want to peel back the layers of our characters' backstories. We're not looking for a dungeon crawler. That's not to say we don't like combat - we love it - but we want more than battles. We're looking for a fair balance that gives us space to enjoy the story intermingled with exciting, challenging combat. Focus on fun over rules, but not too much. Rules are important. They tether us to the world - providing a fair and balanced device through which we play. But some of the rules are stupid. And others don't model freeform actions well. We're looking for someone who can strike a fair balance, someone with the intelligence to play by the rules and the wisdom to ignore them when they don't make sense. Consequences matter, but they must be fair. The risk of defeat makes victory that much sweeter. Catastrophic defeat should be the result of devastating mistakes. However, encounters that are impossible to win should not be framed as encounters; if defeat is inevitable, it is a story device and should be appropriately signposted. In other words, please don't lead us to a dragon and hint that we need to kill it if we can't win the fight. On the other hand, if we fly too close to the sun and you give us ample warning, then we won't be surprised if our wings burn. Loot, loot, loot, loot, loot, loot, loot... Here's a secret: we met during mythic raiding in World of Warcraft. This might give you an insight into how much we love loot. It's a cornerstone of our enjoyment. We want to find cool items, even (especially?) ones that don't have a mechanical impact. And we want to craft them, upgrade them, and generally roll around happily in a big pile of loot. Be inclusive, empathic, reliable, and consistent. You will be DMing in a group comprised mainly of women with varied backgrounds. Racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, or anything of the like is not okay. We would like you to be reliable enough to attend scheduled sessions and consistent with how you present them. From us, you will receive this in return. Encourage a friendly, cooperative atmosphere. Our idea of D&D is a cooperative experience. Our cohesion as a group is more important than an individual character's goals. We will work together to accomplish great things. Real conflict between our characters will be rare. That's not to say that you can't temporarily turn one of us against the others - as long as it makes sense, that's okay. But a long-term focus on internal conflict is not what we want. Be receptive to feedback and willing to give it. If something is not working, we'll discuss it with you respectfully and privately. We expect the same in return. If there's something about how we play that you don't like - please let us know, and we can discuss it. Above all, have as much fun as we are, and be invested. Though we are paying you for your hard work, we want you to have fun too. We don't want you to show up and go through the motions. We want you to care about and be invested in both our fun and your own. Technology We have extensive experience using Roll20 to play campaigns. We are willing to consider any other technologies if they will make for a more compelling experience. We own the whole 5e content library on D&D Beyond, and we're willing to content share with our new DM; this will give you access to all of the source material and campaigns for free. Interested? Please complete this form The last time I posted the reception was overwhelming. This time, I have included a short Google Docs questionnaire to manage the responses better. The questionnaire covers a few questions about your style and what you're looking for out of us. https://forms.gle/cEVSBrX1TphKaMNN7 I appreciate you taking the time to fill it in. I promise to respond to everyone who completes the form within 48 hours, hopefully sooner. If we think there is a good match, we will schedule a brief chat to meet each other! Thanks for reading!
