Compendium not filtering correctly

September 04 (3 years ago)

Issue:
Trying to filter spells in the compendium and it's not working correctly and purchased content is missing when filtering.

Using:
Chrome (Firefox isn't helping much better)
DND 5e with most books for this edition purchased
Pro account
Compendium shared across 4 games, all owned by me

Discovery of problem:
Over the past few days I was trying to help a friend put spells on their sheet and I went to search for their level 2 cleric spells to add to the sheet. However, the compendium is basically only giving me access to the SRDs when I use the filter search. If I scroll through without the filter I am fairly sure I see everything from my other books (XGTE, EGTW ect.). However, if I apply a filter with 2nd level cleric spells, I only get a small list from the PHB (Which I own and suspect that's the only reason it's not saying SRD). Also! If I try to filter by books, I'm not even getting ANYTHING at all. I tried looking up spells from Tasha's Cauldron and there was nothing there.

Small minor problem with Compendium search that is also there:
When searching for a monster and trying to filter, it ALWAYS pre-filters "no language" in the language section of the monster filter. It's INCREDIBLY annoying to have to uncheck that EVERY time I try to filter monsters. If that could also be looked at that would be fantastic. I don't know if this is an issue with anyone else but it's a pain.

I'm fairly sure that's all the issues I'm having and how I discovered them. But, it's really frustrating that I can't even search or the items I bought easily. If there is any farther information needed, feel free to ask.

For compendium issues, it is almost always better to file a Help Center Request. You may not see immediate action (it may be known issue that is backburnered or blocked for some reason), but it will open a repair ticket, and that will be assigned to a dev. A report in the forum might never be seen by a dev, and doesn't trigger any mechanism to log an issue.

FWIW, I believe I have seen the cleric spell filtering issue reported before.

Only seeing PHB results for second-level cleric spells is expected behavior; neither Tasha's nor Xanathar's nor Eberron introduces any new second-level cleric spells. (At least not that I'm aware of--is there a particular spell from one of your sources that is missing from the filtered results?)

That said, at first I thought you were having the same isssue I did when I started, so even though the following is not directly relevant, I thought I would leave this here in case it helps somebody: In general there's a right way to find a class' spell list, and a wrong way to find a class' spell list. Based on your description, you have been doing it the right way. Unfortunately, the wrong way is by far the easiest thing to stumble across.

1. The Wrong Way: Using the Compendium Search Bar

Let's search for spells!

Oh, look! "Cleric Spells by Level!" Sounds like exactly what we're looking for. Uh-oh ...

We get a comprehensive spell table that is not filterable by class. "Cleric Spells by Name," "Druid Spells by Level", etc.--all the results under the "Lists" category, in fact--point to this same table, which has all spells from all classes jumbled together. (Also, the source says "SRD" even though there are non-SRD spells in my particular version of the table--including the two versions of "Booming Blade", a cantrip not castable by clerics.)

2. The Right Way: Using The Compendium Menu and Filtering Results.

Let's ignore that seach bar and look at the menu below it.

Look, a listing for "Spells"! Let's click it.

OK, here are all the spells. There's some new black text below the search bar, in small italic font, which, as it turns out, is a clickable "Filter Results" button. (For accessibility, it might be worth Roll20's while to lower the DC on that particular Perception check.)

We get a popup window for filtering ...

And we select, say, "Cleric" for classes and "Level 2"  for level.

And, ta-da! We have second-level cleric spells from all our purchased sources.

The reason there are only PHB sources (and, in my case, duplicates from the Essentials Kit and one little dude from Kobold Press' Creature Codex) is that neither Xanathar's nor Tasha's nor Eberron introduces any new second-level cleric spells.

Note, this is the same workflow for filtering monsters by, say, challenge rating, except we're clicking "Monsters" instead of "Spells" at the first step. Which is where we encounter the final reported bug: the "No Language" filter is applied by default for Languages, when it should be left blank.

And this one is definitely a bug. It's solveable by deselecting the "No Language" filter, as you've noted, but it would be nice not to have to do that.

I hope this helps someone.

Edit: You're welcome, keithcurtis and Oginme!

Also! If I try to filter by books, I'm not even getting ANYTHING at all. I tried looking up spells from Tasha's Cauldron and there was nothing there.

Sorry I missed this on a first read-through.

Preliminary question: when you do this, is the book the only filter applied?

Because then I get results.

If I add the cleric filter, I get the two cleric spells from Tasha's: "Spirit Shroud" and "Summon Celestial," neither of which are second level.

And so of course if I then apply a "Level 2" filter I get no results.

Although now I've found a new bug ... where was "Summon Celestial" when the only filter applied was Tasha's? [And where was "Summon Beast" for that matter? All the other Tasha's spells show up on the larger list, except for those two (found on two sides of a single page of the physical book, pages 109-110).]

Thank you, Sarah!  This has been bugging me for a long time, especially when trying to guide players to finding the spell descriptions.  Much appreciated description of how to use the filters.
