Voice

I'm about to jump back into Roll20 after many years of being away - do most games use Discord or the built in Roll20 voice?

Roll20 voice might be fine now, but I've been using Discord for voice for so long, it's become habit. For what it's worth, I haven't seen very many video/voice complaints in the forum for a long time.

Many use Discord, I do. An underrecognized feature of Roll20 is "Video Only" mode.  You can have the video webcam boxes in Roll20, but have Voice thru Discord.  This method has some advantages (discord conversation continues even if roll20's video or entire tabletop meets a glitch, or even if you reload/refresh or log-out of Roll20 during game). Could be worth trying Roll20's voice feature to see if it works for everyone in your group. The most common problem is: It works for most people, but not for 1 person in the group.

This is what our group does. It has some good advantages. Discord is built to do stuff like this and has superior sound controls, noise cancellation, etc. And it keeps the video on the VTT, so you don't have to juggle windows.

My games are intercontinental so there’s no point using the Roll20 audio. I started with Google Hangouts and switched to Discord.
Roll20 video was a bit glitchy for a couple of my players so we switched to using jitsi.org (free and no limit on call length) - before playing we have sound and video on for a pre-game chat, then turn off the cameras while in Roll20 and jitsi just trundles along in the background for voice, never had a problem even with 6-players running for 5+ hours.  That said I think I'll try Roll20's video/audio again and see if it's more stable now.
