The heroes begin the next day refreshed but unsure how to proceed. Deciding that they need the benefit of Elaryan's wisdom, Nor heals the sorcerer of the effects of the Styx water. Eovan has also returned the party overnight, so the five companions gather at the table in the keep's war room to plan. They decide the first order of business is to return to Anestral City. Using a combination of divination , overland flight , and wind walk spells, they make their way back to the capital over the course of two days-- it seems that the fungal queen had deposited them many, many miles from home. When they reach the city, most of the party retired to the Inn of the Defender's Heart. Elaryan and Eovan slip away, and make their way to Elaryan's chapel in the ruined part of town. The situation in the lower city has only gotten worst in the past few days. Most structures lie completely razed, dark shapes slip through dimly lit alleys, and swarms of carrion-feeders feast on the corpses of the dead. As the sorcerer and the rogue are making their way stealthily across town, they disturb on such swarm, an unkindness of undead ravens. In a sudden burst of flapping wings the vicious birds are everywhere, attempting to feast on the brave heroes! Eovan begins firing desperately into the swarm, while Eovan sends fireballs and lightning bolts into their midst. The heroes are victorious, but at grave cost. Both have been wounded, and Elaryan has been blinded, his eyes raked away by murderous talons and razor-sharp beaks. Eovan leads his friend onward to the chapel, where several of Elaryan's acolytes are waiting. They send a runner to purchase a scroll of remove blindness , and once the sorcerer's sight has returned, fill the party in on what has transpired recently. The acolyte's main concern is that their Holy Book has been stolen. The Book contains a collection of scholarly writings about the Demon Lord Angazhan, compiled with various recorded sayings of Elaryan himself. In Elaryan's absence, his followers have been using it as guide to the proper way to live. They are not completely sure where the Book went, but they suspect a half-orc named Vagorg, who lives in the ruins of a nearby library, and collects all manner of books. Elaryan and Eovan promise to return the Book, and have one of the acolytes lead them to the library. The sorcerer and the rogue approach the ruins somewhat stealthily, but because Elaryan has not doused his light source, they are unable to hide entirely. Vagorg, standing within the structure, calls out "who goes there?" Rather than replying, the companions decide to take the initiative and attack. The ensuing battle lasts a few rounds, but Vagorg is hopelessly outmatched. In the end, he lies slain, and Elaryan and Eovan search his lair. Within, they find the Angazhani Holy Book, and a large collection of other writings, including Vagorg's journals. It seems the half-elf was one the chaos cultists who did not worship evil and that he has been taking notes on the cultists that opened the Hellmouth in an attempt to thwart their plans. Most of these demon-worshipers follow Deskari and Baphomet, so Vagorg was surprised to discover worshipers of Angazhan in the city. He had stolen the Book to try and determine how this new cult fit into the Demon Lords' plans. Eovan points out that the journals also contain a lot of intelligence about the Abyssal forces that would be invaluable to the Knights of the Pale, but Elaryan recalls that the Knights destroyed the last demonic writings that the party brought to them, so he has a better plan. He has his acolytes gather all of the remaining books from the library and bring them to his chapel. There, the sorcerer institutes a new directive-- the church is to continue to seek out new converts as before, but now they will also collect knowledge. Reading through the Holy Book that his followers have cobbled together, Elaryan is also dismayed to find that his acolytes have fallen back on the original teachings of Angazhan in his absence, murdering the week and devouring their hearts. He explains to the faithful that "murdering" and "devouring" are meant to be metaphorical. From now on, no Angazhani is to kill a humanoid, and their ritual feasts will be of bread and wine, rather than flesh and blood. The acolytes are somewhat perturbed by this message, but unwilling to contradict Angazhan's avatar. Elaryan appoints one of them to be head cleric, to enforce these precepts in his absence. And before he leaves, he shares with them one last miracle. Burning ritual offerings to the Ravenous King, he reaches out his hand to Eovan, granting the half-elf the permanent ability to see in the dark as well as any demon. The cultists are impressed, and beat their flesh-drums in exaltation. Everyone who played gains 1,500 XP.
