Avatar Stuck on Top

I saw that some players complained about their avatars being stuck at the top of the playing screen. I want to figure out how to fix this. I cleared my cache, turned off my extensions, and reported this bug to Roll 20. I currently use Chrome. If this happened to you, please tell me how you got around this issue. I am very new to Roll20 and don't know anything about macros or API. Thanks.

If the avatar location was set to "Top" by mistake, here's how to change it back to "Bottom.": 1. Select "My Settings" (gear icon) and click "Audio & Video" to expand the menu. 2. In the "Audio & Video" menu, select the "Video Display" tab. 3. Use the "Player video/avatar location" dropdown menu to swtich from from "Top" to "Bottom (default)" My understanding is that each player can personalize their own display, so if a player wants their avatar at the bottom of the screen instead of the top (or vice versa), they will have to do these steps themselves instead of relying on the GM to do it. Please let us know if this works, or if something stranger is going on. Edit: The GM needs to have "Player controlled" selected under the "Movable avatar/video screens" dropdown under My Settings/Audio & Video, Video Display; see below.
Here's the problem: I don't see that on my menu. I'm just a player, not a DM. I don't see that menu on my settings. All I see is "Player video/Avatar size."

That's strange! In a game where I am a player, I can access the location dropdown menu no problem. The only thing I can think of is that this option is hidden from people with free accounts for some reason. Which would be an odd choice if true, and it's especially odd that you have unwanted top placement when bottom should be the default. Sorry; I wish I could help more! Perhaps a Help Center Request is in order, so you can get a formal ticket started. Unless someone more clever than I am wants to chime in with something else to try. Edit: The GM needs to have "Player controlled" selected under the "Movable avatar/video screens" dropdown under My Settings/Audio & Video, Video Display; see below.

I think that this setting gets disabled/hidden if the GM has disabled video (and maybe audio?) in their settings.  All the games in which I am a player have that hidden, and I don't see it as GM in any of my games either, but the first thing I do when I create a new game or copy an existing one is to turn off Roll20's audio/video communication. MandoMonique, you may need to get with your GM (possibly sometime other than during game time) and see if it will expose that setting to you if they re-enable the in-Roll20 video.

My GMs and I all have audio and video disabled ("Others can hear or see"--"None," "I can hear or see"--"None"), and can still access the video avatar/location dropdown, whether as a player or a DM. That said--I found something promising! Here's another setting to ask your DM to check ("Movable avatar/video screens: Player controlled"): (Somehow I missed noticing this setting the first time I checked out the Video Display menu from the GM side; sorry about that!)

Right, Sarah's latest answer! I believe that (intentionally) the Players setting for Video/Avatar Location is hidden, If-when the GM of the group has preselected that Moveable Avatars are Not Player Controlled. Ask the GM to allow Player Controlled Avatars, and then the Player(s) should have the Top/Bottom settings choice and the ability to drag-drop avatars around the tabletop to any position.

Interesting.  I don't see that in my games at all.  You can see from the presence of the art library tab, that this isn't just the player setting screen. When you say you have the video and audio disabled, is it the entire chat tech system?

I believe you have to turn it on to make those options available. I don't know if they persist after you disable, though.

If you have to turn on Roll20's Chat Tech, in order to use Player Moveable Avatars, and the Moveable Avatars option disappears if you disable Chat Tech entirely, then my question: Is that intentional (e.g. Moveable Avatars does not work if the Chat Tech is off)?  Or is it an overlooked setting, a GUI mistake, that this setting can be restored for everyone? keithcurtis said: I believe you have to turn it on to make those options available. You are right, Gold--while I set broadcasting and receiving video and audio to "None", I did not bother to turn off the default Chat Tech selction. Apparently that's what makes the difference. Nonintuitive. I echo your two questions!
It took a bit of trial and error and working with my DM, but I fixed it! Thanks, y'all!
