How to I check what content my friends own?

Simple question. I wanna gift my friends some stuff; but I don't know what they already HAVE. I tried to gift them something I knew they already had (xanathars) and it seemed to let me get a decent ways along in the check-out process. Since I, obviously, don't want to waste money getting them something they already own, is there a way for me to see what stuff they already have?

I think the only option is to ask them, or perhaps someone very close to them, like a spouse. I can't imagine that any company would release the purchase records of one customer to another. That being said, a wish list or registry might not be a bad idea.
I mean, on Steam I have a little sidebar that says 'Friends that have played previously' or 'Friends who already own this game' and if I try to purchase a copy it greys out the option for people who already own it. It helps a lot since I can know if a friend has, say, Age of Empires II or not and if I should gift it or not.

Wow, I'm glad I don't shop on Steam! I hope you can opt out. Still, I do think a wish list or registry is a good idea. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a suggestion for it.

Wish List is a live feature, Roll20 Marketplace introduced it a couple years ago, it might not widely known, I think it's under-rated. The user can set your Wishlist(s) to be Public or Private. Test: https://app.roll20.net/wishlist/8501 That's the Public share-URL of one of my Wish Lists.

Just did some testing. Selected "Gift to Player" option and got this message after clicking "Check out with Paypal"

Well paint me blue and call me a smurf. I had completely forgotten that feature. I'll go sit in the corner and brush up on Roll20 lore. :)

Honestly, it's much more of a boon than anything. Multiple times now I've seen that a friend was playing something and decided to check it out and found myself enjoying it or found out it was a multiplayer game and we could play together. Not to mention I've realized, as well, that friends DON'T have something like the DLC to a game and I've purchased it for them. While I get that some people value their privacy immensely, in this case it's just generally helpful. Like, for example, let's say you have someone who wants to play, oh, an Oath of the Crown paladin. But you lack the SCAG. That player can look, see that you don't have it, and gift it to you and now not only can he play as his OotC Paladin but any future players you GM for will have access to all that content as well. I was concerned before I'd buy him something he already had so I backed out before then.
