Player Character Token Setting Trouble Shooting

Hey all, I've searched for this specific issue and I'm not finding so I apologize beforehand if this information is available on this forum. But I don't believe it is. Here is my issue: I have set up character tokens to be attached to player characters so that they can control them in-game. Great. However, every time I drag the token onto the map I have to re-assign the token to the player. Every single time. The baffling thing is that the token is automatically assigned to one player, but only the one. I've looked over every token and character journal setting to see if anything is different, but each one has the same settings. What am I missing here? How can I set up every token so that when I drag it onto the map it will automatically be assigned to the corresponding player? Edit: Thanks everyone for the help. If you're here troubleshooting the same issue just remember to delete and re-set the default token to the character sheet every time you make an edit to the token after it is dropped on the map. Really handy knowledge to save you a ton of time.

Everyone's been there Dan. ;-) This should help. ie the steps/order is very important. https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals Cheers

It sounds like you don't have the default token correctly. When you edit the sheet and set the "default token", that is exactly what you are setting. You are telling that sheet that this particular token, with all the current settings, is what needs to be generated when the name of the sheet is dragged to the vtt. Any edits to the token after that are temporary changes that only apply for that map page, and won't apply anywhere else unless you copy/paste that instance of the token to another map. If the "default token" doesn't have all the correct settings, you need to drag out that token, make the necessary changes to it, edit the associated character sheet and remove the old default token, and finally set and save the new default token. https://wiki.roll20.net/Linking_Tokens_to_Journals
Hm, I have followed these exact steps to get where I am. Maybe I am not explaining my issue correctly? The issue is that when I drag and drop the character from the journal, it drops the token. However I have to go into token settings and tell it to represent the correct character every time. This is true for all player tokens except one, which when I drag and drop their character from the journal it drops with the token, nameplate, and the player can control it. Reading the linking tokens wiki, I am not seeing this issue addressed.

Hi Dan, It is almost certainly due to not saving as default after you have assigned and set up the token. If you assign a default and then make any changes, those changes will not be reflected in the default token*. Assigning default has to be the very last step. If you make any changes to the token after that, it must be saved as default again. I can't think of any other way you might be getting the results you report, which describes exactly what you would see if they were done out of order. *The only exception is the values in linked attributes from the bubbles, which are pulled from the sheet, and do not live on the token.
1. Drag a token onto the map. 2. Open the token settings and configure it the way you want. Make sure it is set as 'Represents Character' for the correct character sheet. (Make sure you don't have more than one character with the same name also!) 3. Go to the character sheet edit page, and delete the default token (click on the 'Remove' button that appears when you hover your mouse over the 'Default Token (optional)' picture. You will see a message that says, 'Are you sure you want to delete the default token?'. Click on 'Yes, delete'. Keep the character sheet edit page open. 4. Make sure the token is still selected, and then click on 'Use Selected Token' to reset the default token to the currently selected token as it is currently configured . If you make any future changes to the token, they will not be automatically saved to the default token until you resave the default token again . Setting the default token has to be the very last step you take after making changes that you want to keep.
@Jarren Got it! Thanks everyone for walking me through this. It's all in the details. Killer!

Every single user of roll20 and I'd even bet the devs even do it....you keep forgetting to update the default token. Its a stupid tedious task but everytime the default token changes, its no longer the actual default token, you have to go into the sheet, hit edit, detach the old one with the old settings, and then update it with the new one you just tweaked. if you have API access this is a simple button click with tokenmod with a good macro setup. We all make this mistake atleast once a week.
