Seven years ago the city of Oberheim disappeared in a blinding flash of light and an eerie fog swept out of the ruins, swallowing up the surrounding countryside. For seven years, men went in and only monsters came out. Some went seeking loved ones, some a way to reclaim the city and others heard the call of darkness and had to come and worship. The result was always the same; a tide of evil flowing out of that glowing, whispering fog. And so the people of the nearby town of Neuberg learned to defend their homes against the beastmen and the ratfolk, the mutants and the witches, the shrieking horrors that would come to wreak havoc. They began to call the city and it's surrounds the Fane - a place of black magic and evil demons - and built stout walls to protect themselves. A year ago everything changed; the fog thinned and for the first time in years people came out of the Fane. They were mad, starved and jabbering, but people nonetheless. The things they whispered about lead the curious into the Fane and some of those curious souls lived to return. They brought artefacts with strange powers and tales of a being known only as the Wish Maker at the centre of the Fane, said to grant the heart's desire of whoever could reach them. Recently the Fane has seen new bloodshed as disparate factions vie for power and control of the corruption. The monsters grow bolder and folks whisper that the Bishop's Fence is failing and any day the fog will come spilling across the land. You dwell on this history as your coach rattles along the High Road to Neuberg, a shiver running down your spine as you look out across the bleak Border Moors and see the shimmering lights in the sky above the Fane. Off to Neuberg to seek your fortune. Welcome to Oberheim, a city shattered by apocalyptic magics and haunted by the tortured dead. Inspired by the STALKER games and Warhammer Fantasy I'm aiming for a gritty dark fantasy; think plague doctors with muskets or Van Helsing in a gas mask. Warhammer End Times without the Space Marines. Using Five Torches Deep and Old School Essentials to create an OSR feel with some modernised mechanics. If you're looking for: • dangerous and unpredictable magic. Chance of spell failure, madness and mutations! • deadly high stakes combat • an emphasis on player driven problem solving • low fantasy, gunpowder, faith and steel tone. STALKER meets Warhammer with a bit of David Gemmell thrown in This could be the campaign for you. We'll be doing a lot of traditional D&Disms - rolling stats in order, gold for xp, characters are grubby adventurers not shiny heroes - but Five Torches Deep has some character customisation similar to 5E, allowing a blend of OSR and modern mechanics. I'm applying my own modifications on top of that for a more grounded feel to combat and avoid hit point bloat. Play will be structured so each session is self contained preventing the game from stalling if people can't make it and at the same time letting me try something different from week to week as different teams explore the Fane or deal with events in Neuberg.
