I have a map that gets non-player-controlled-tokens as they are revealed, meaning if they move the party token anywhere, unless I put a marker *on* the map, they can't see it or reveal anything they aren't supposed to see. This happened with different maps as they slowly uncovered more paper maps in-game, and made paper maps useful instead of a nice-to-have. And then I showed them how to make marks with markers and add text and add emojis from text and now they have their own world map that they all cooperate to keep in order, but it's got various in-character marks so folks can figure out who made what mark. Honestly, the interactive map keeps them totally involved in keeping track of in-game happenings and making marks for things they think are "important." Really, the world map where I give them almost total control is a great "landing page" for them if they're away, because it's there for them to use and sets them a reminder of where they are and what they're doing.
