Generally, the total number doesn't matter, it is what the exact die roll was that matters for the highlight. By default, the following is true: Green=highest result on the die, like rolling a 12 on a d12. Blue=having both the highest and lowest results on a die, like rolling 4d6 and having both a 1 and a 6 in the results. Red=having the lowest result on the die, like rolling a 1 on a d8. So, if you rolled a d20+13 and got 14, it would be red because the die result was a 1 (lowest die value). If someone rolled a d20-3 and got a 17, it would be green because the die result was a 20 (highest die value).
