Question about Charactermancer options (or lack of options...)

I'm trying to set up a game and today a friend of mine and I tried to create a character but our options were much less than compared to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDPJbcJnZEg&t=1718s In this youtube video around 25:30 and a bit earlier, you can see how many options they have for background story! But for us, we only had Acolyte! When I created the game, I chose "D&D 5e by roll20". Do I need to pay subscription in order to unlock more options in Charactermancer creation? Or maybe choose different Character Sheet template?

When using Charactermancer, you only see the options for books you have bought on Roll20. Acolyte is the one everyone gets for free because its in the SRD. This isn't Roll20 deliberately forcing you to buy content, btw. They can only include things that are in the SRD with their free options. You don't need to buy the extra books to enter options yourself to a character, but I don't think you can do manual additions like that through the charactermancer. If you haven't bought stuff for D&D on the Roll20 store, you might be better off skipping the charactermancer, and enter everything manually, referring to the books outside of roll20.

And to answer your other question: No subscription is necessary to use Compendium content or Charactermancer automation.
I see... But what if I have some of the books? Can I somehow link them to roll20? Or do I have to buy them specifically from the site here?

This is a question that is often asked by folks coming to Roll20 (or D&D Beyond, Fantasy Grounds or others). Wizards of the Coast does not have a digital/print correspondence. The books are really two different entities. A common comparison is that it is like saying, "I have the book, do I still have to buy a ticket to see the movie adaptation?" A huge number of hours goes into converting products for use on a digital platform, so yeah, if you want to use digital conversions, they have to be purchased separately. That being said, Paizo does have a program for linking some content, offering a discount for purchases of different versions of the same title.
Understandable. If my friend buys the books and join my game as player, can I still use them for my game as a DM? Or the DM has to buy the books?

The account which creates the game is the only account which can share the digital books in that game. You can have your friend buy the books and create the game. They can then invite you into the game and promote you to DM. You would have access to those resources within the game and the compendiums outside the game.
