The Draconian Tales and Tragedies is a Call of Cthulhu project by two dedicated TTRPG professionals who have been working together for a couple years. Our aim is to provide an immersive and well rounded experience focused on internal logic and good interactions between PCs, NPCs and their environment. In this project we offer the possibility of running many of the different official CoC modules available on Roll20, which can lead into one another or perhaps develop into an entirely original campaign meant to run for the long term. It all depends on the players. In such a story-driven and narrative-focused RPG such as Call of Cthulhu, we believe we can offer the best of our strengths, creating the right scenario for character development and externalized experiences (i.e. experienced lived through someone else's eyes). To achieve the desired effect, we have gathered a series of professionally made resources, such as maps, ambient music, ambient soundscapes, custom tokens and handouts and much more. If you are not interested in the music or ambience elements, you can always turn those off at their source, so they are not disruptive for you and still available for others. The main ego behind this project belongs to Drakonyan Azkar, long-time Game Master with most of his experience in Dungeons & Dragons 3.5. Always striving to achieve a good balance between realism and playability, Drakonyan (Drak, for short) makes his games rooted in lore and real-world references to make the fictional world just a little closer to reality. He has over a decade of experience with map-making, story-writing, playing characters and half a decade of experience with education, music and the academic study of History. Assisting Drakonyan in his mental deviations is his long-time friend and ally Khessoros (Khes, for short). He has dedicated the good years of his life to studying and improving upon skills in design, typography, digital art and, more recently, map-making. He is every bit as mad and unshackled as his colleague, but less experienced with TTRPGs in general, thus falling to the spot of Assistant to the Keeper, handling brainstorming and handout-making in prep-time and managing music, ambience and book-keeping during sessions. Working together, we do our best to keep communication open and flowing with players in all our working hours and we take feedback very seriously, not shying away from criticism. We are not perfect and likely far from the best, so we make sure to improve upon every session. If you have questions, comments or concerns, you can find us here on Roll20 or over Discord with our tags. Check our Contacts page for more. As the game of Call of Cthulhu and the nature of Cosmic Horror go, every story is a tragedy, whether it ends with postponing the apocalypse or being locked away in an asylum for the mentally ill. Our tragedies aim to bring forth the roots of the Cosmic Horror as both a literary gene and a philosphy. Things from beyond this world are not sights for the tourist player to photograph, but rather hints of an outer existence that defies the human ability to rationalize its own experiences. A single "tragedy" (i.e. a scenario/adventure) may last for a single session or take six months to resolve, with the shorter ones serving as starting points. Our sessions last for 3h and may extend or get shortened a bit (~15min) depending on what is a convenient stopping point for both players and keepers. The sessions happen on the same day every week, but exceptions may happen upon demand. A quorum of 3 players is necessary to run a session, but special circumstances may allow a session to happen with fewer than 3 present or to be skipped because of a single player who can't make it. It's up to the party as a group. Against all common sense, to participate in these tragedies and dellusions, one must pay the ones responsible for painting the nightmare. A single session costs $15 (USD) paid individually by each player (though you are welcome to pay for a friend!), which helps us afford a living in this dystopian reality of the 2020s. Payments can only be processed via PayPal, but depending on your conditions and location, other arrangements may be possible. No, it is not me. I speak of the draconian aspect of the game we run. Though it is always going to be the fictional environment of a game and no one runs any real danger, we do not shy away from making the horror of the stories feel more vivid and close to reality. This horror can come in any shape or form, including, but not limited to: monsters, existential dread, social violence and discrimination, psychological damage and dementia, phobias, gore, opression etc. We ensure the presence of safety tools in our games and ask politely that you inform us of any triggers before the game. On a more positive note, we **do not** tolerate any discrimination happening outside of the game world, even when disguised as "in character". We also have a list of critical topics we do not include in our games , either mentioning them in passage (e.g. an NPC could mention the event to the party, but the scene would not be narrated) or excluding them entirely. This is meant to ensure the experiences lived in the game don't interfere with our very real personal problems, moving the horror of the fiction to actual horror or simply letting the party go off-topic. The stars of the show and the heroes of our tragedies. In our games, you may play one or more investigators, but only one at a time and, preferably, a single one throughout a scenario. This investigator may fail and fall to madness, disability or death. Due to the nature of chance and the game of dice, this may happen shortly or not at all, so we keep a list a pre-generated characters available for the players (you may also pick one for a kickstart) and advise you keep one or two backup concepts to replace a fallen investigator. We use the standard rules for making investigators , allowing you to pick from any context-relevant occupation card or make a custom one (in which case you need the keeper's approval). The stats/characteristics/attributes use the rolled format. This may generate internal unbalance in the party, but it helps tone up the realism (we are not all born equal, after all) and tone down min/max behavior, which we condone as something that moves the focus from the story to the mechanics. Don't forget that despite the horror, the main objective is to have fun, so play an investigator that interests you. Having useful skills for the party is good, but you are more likely to be useful if you are engaged and having fun. You can make your character manually in the platform of your preference or you can make it straight into the Roll20 game by running the charactermancer on a fresh character sheet. In order to provide a smooth and enjoyable experience to our players, we count with a Plus subscription on Roll20, a premium bot on our Discord server, Discord Nitro, the Steam version of Krita, Call of Cthulhu compendium on Roll20, top-tier Patreon subscriptions for fantasy cartographers, officially licensed material by Chaosium integrated with Roll20 and organizational support for players in our Discord server, such as an #archive channel and full support to allow for visitors and guests without disrupting sessions. As previously mentioned, we also have safety tools in the Roll20 games to avoid unpleasant experiences. Schedule The game is currently set for Thursdays 7pm EST (following daylight saving adjustments for that timezone). There is a possibility to do it on Mondays or Tuesdays at the same starting time. The project is just launching, so we will wait until we have 5 players to begin.
