Macros for Chaos Bolt and Wild Magic Surge

I know you can do that with roll tables, but for Chaos Bolt ist much easier with one macro and I haven't seen it anywhere, so I thought I post it here. For Wild Magic on the other hand it's probably faster to just roll the D-100 and look it up, but I wanted to do it anyways. Just in case you don't can or want to set up a roll table every new game. It's all based on RainbowEncoders improved roll index manipulation.

If you test the Wild Magic macro, don't worry if nothing happens. It's just really slow. Also the table normally requires 1d100, but since everything has two possibilities I made it 1d50 with one possibility. I haven't tried D100 version, but it would be even slower so I don't care.

Nicely done! You've clearly understood the core concepts. Your form is a little rough in places and there are a couple of optimisations that can be done. One thing I never explicitly stated with roll duplication is that it doesn't actually have to be a precise duplicate but can be any value that would be derived from the original roll.

So in your chaos bolt where you duplicate the d8 in order to compare it to the numbers 1 to 8 for the purposes of selecting the damage type to show. Instead of using an additional inline roll to do that comparison against the duplicated d8 you can set the values to mimic that comparison and then reference it directly. So instead of 8 lots of the numbers 8 to 1 they could be replaced with something like this

With your Wild Magic macro you are absolutely correct to only consider 50 distinct values rather than a full d100. However if you had wanted to display the actual d100 roll you could have used computed syntax to not mess up the index manipulation and halve the result. For example

...

...

I also agree with your assessment that this technique is not best suited for Wild Magic due to the time all the nested rolls take up. However if you're feeling adventurous a significant reduction in the number of inline rolls is possible. For you can perform roll duplication on duplicated rolls, useful if the range of results has been reduced by mimicking a calculation.

The numbers 0 to 49 instead of using a single roll (0..49) for a total of 50 values can also be represented using three rolls as  10*(0..4) + 5*(0..1) + (0..4) for a total of 12 values. Meaning instead of 50 values * 50 entries for 2500 inline rolls to hold duplicated values you can use 12*50 for 600 rolls to hold duplicated values, plus 150 to dupe and transform the d50 and another 50 to reconstitute and perform final comparison for a total of 800 inline rolls

Oh wow. That's so much faster. I noticed something interesting. For the manipulation of the second d8 I had to add an extra pair of brackets here [[[[83+$[[82]]]]]]. In the old version it wasn't necessary. Any idea why? 

I'm sometimes a bit blind to the easy solution, so thank you very much for the help. 

In the previous version you had an unbalanced set of brackets when you compared the second d8 with 4

 4=[[[[{$[[135]]+4}/4}=4]]]

That extra bracket increased the 'level' of the nesting the rest of the macro had and thus the extra brackets weren't required. I try to avoid runs of brackets since they can cause all sorts of problems that crop up in unexpected places.

Also the section of the updated macro

$[[$[[83]]]] [[[[83+$[[82]]]]]] 1d8=[[[ [[[1d8]]]

could be cleaned up as

$[[$[[83]]]] [[[ 1d8+index offset=[[83+[[1d8]] ]]

The triple bracket being next to the dynamic reference is important since it serves double duty as undoing the de-nesting from the run of brackets and causing the further rolls to be nested allowing plain numeric access without further awkward or unbalanced brackets.

Also the reason it's much faster is likely the removal of the 1d0 rolls. Nested rolls have a nasty habit of being sent to the roll server one at a time. So they represented 8 round trips before the macro could continue.
