D&D 5e Adventurer's League [R20/(SkypeOrMumble)] LMoP Start: (Level 1) Friday August 22 2014 @ 6:00 PM EDT (UTC - 05)

Are the characters pregens or do we get to make our own?

For Adventurer's League you make your own, they even have rules if you want to start with a pregen and switch it later (it is allowed up to 4 or 5 off of the top of my head). So if you want to grab one from the Lost Mines of Phandelver until you get a little experience under your belt that's not a bad idea. I plan on running these from time to time, other DMs plan on a more set schedule.

I was under the impression adventures league could only run on wednesdays? Or was that just running encounters?

Feel free to read it for yourself, however it seems to be very much based on the honor system and the approved material can be run at both the events and at home. I too at first figured it was going to be highly restrictive and it was going to prevent me from being interested. However it seems you should very well be able to play a character online and bring them to your local store.
