As a GM, how am I supposed to guide players through character creation?

Me and my friends are trying to get a Savage Worlds campaign started. It's our very first time with GDRs, and it's the first time I do the GM. Following an internet guide I set up a new campaign with reccomended settings and character sheets for SW. But the problem is, how am I supposed to guide players through character creation? Do they just add a new character to the Journal and then edit the sheet themselves? But I also need to check what they write in the sheet in order to find any eventual mistakes. Do I create the character for them and then they just tell me which traits & stuff they want and I adjust the sheet? What is the best way to solve this problem?

1) You create a character (Journal tab, click "Add", click "Character") 2) Assign it to the player (open Character you just created, click "Edit", assign "In Player's Journals" and  "Can be Edited & Controlled By" to the player who will control the character) 3) From there you can let them create their character on their own, or with your input, or whatever as you see fit.  Which Savage Worlds character sheet are you using?

Also, sheets update in live time. As they edit, you should be able to see what they are doing (as soon as the finish editing a field. You can monitor progress as it happens, that way.

Something worth noting, because it's not always clear to new DMs, is that setting "In Player's Journals" to "All Players" only grants visibility to the "Bio & Info" tab, not the Character Sheet tab.  So the player can provide a portrait and a description for others, which is separate from any description on their sheet, which only they and the DM can see. I require all of my players to have both, and set "In Player's Journals" to "All Players" (sometimes I have to add either or both myself, for the terminally indecisive). Of course, you should only set "Can be edited and controlled by" to the actual player, although you can add someone helping them to set up their character.  But in the latter case, it's best to revoke the helper's permission later (I play under one DM who does this, and forgets to clean up, and it winds up with people moving the wrong token in combat). edit: corrected tab name
@Gauss I'm using   Savage Worlds Tabbed Character Sheet 4.0.1
