Movement of some tokens leaves markers every 5 feet.

When the dm moves npc tokens and when one of the players moves their token they leave the trail of markers shown in the attached pic. Any idea what might be causing this? Thanks

Looks like they are using waypoints. Here's a wiki entry about using them.

I thought that also, but they are never pressing Q and the markers always appear at 5-ft intervals.

Another way to use waypoints is by right clicking each point while dragging the token (when you would otherwise press Q). Your picture above shows an indirect path to the final square, so they must be doing something to specify that little jog upward at 15ft.
