Dice Rolling/Targeting Enemies

Really dumb question here.  I'm quite positive this has been answered in a FAQ somewhere, but my search-fu is lacking this morning.  Anyhow... I want to take advantage of Roll20's intuitive dice rolling feature.  It is so easy to just click on the attribute or ability or what-not and have the result pop up in the chat window.  That's really cool.  What I am curious about is whether or not you can specifically target a creature/npc/enemy and have the result auto-update the token? For example, say Haggard the Horrible is a PC walking through a cave and he enounters a Goblin.  Haggard wins Initiative, and swings his mighty axe at the Goblin.  The dice are rolled, and the attack should be a hit (say the dice came up as a 19), and the damage to be done would be, say, 8.  These results are in the chat window, and the GM could apply the damage to the Goblin's token whenever he gets around to it.  But is there a way where that 8 points of damage can be automatically applied at the time of the attack, provided the attack is in excess of the target's AC?  Is there a way to specifically target the token and have the rolls applied to that token? I get that there are going to be times where this doesn't need to happen, specifically when an effect allows for a saving throw.  And that's fine; in those cases we'd want the GM to intervene and roll the saving throw or apply whatever needs to be applied before the damage is dealt.  But what about if it's a simple "I swing my sword at the enemy who has no resistances"?  Is there a way for this to happen, or does it always require GM intervention?

It would require the game creator to have a Pro account.  Macros can read, but not alter sheet/token attributes, so it would require the use of mod/api scripts to do that.  And those are only available at the Pro account level.

Exactly what I was looking for.  Clear, concise answer.  Thank you!
