"Long ago, in many ages past... the ancient text describes a people, who through ingenuity and ambition, created a world where they had everything they could ask for. Food. Enough to share.  Clean water. Enough to waste.  Happiness. Enough to endure. and... Freedom. Enough to dream. Yet, even with it all... they were still broken. Chaos and corruption still lingered in many souls like a deep dark pit, often filled with debased desires, wonton addictions and cruel violence. It is said that the weapons were made from pure hatred, fueled by anger and when they were used... the world could not bear the burden of such evil. Arcadia shattered. Pieces of her terrestrial body were flung out into the dark expanse, but most of her form remained, although changed forever. What once was a seamless world, was now fragmented into innumerable islands of rock and soil, floating, gliding, colliding, crumbling and eventually falling into the hot red "Core".  In this age, also known as the Last Age, people are not as they were in the text. We are hungry. We are thirsty. We are unhappy. Worst of all... We are not free.  Chained by cords of ethereal light and viscous ink, we are now tethered to this world. We were brought into this world, chained prematurely, already a prisoner of our own destruction. And from our first breath, the chains begin to pull, ever so slowly, we are dragged to the burning center of Arcadia, to the glowing red "Core". This is the world you live in, this is the beginning of the stories we tell." - Scrollogist Callow Crownes Welcome to Arcadia, the Shattered World. *GM's Notes* This is for a one-shot, possibly longer. Hi everyone, I'm Kal. I've been DM/GMing for quite some time now and have to say I never get tired of it. Been running the same group for about 4 years now, but have also done plenty of one shots and mini series with fresh faces. If this is your first time playing Numenera, don't worry! It's a super awesome and fluid system that only requires a little patience to understand and grasp. It's perfect for a one shot! I won't go into details about the system too much, but the setting is in the way future, where the technologies of ancient civilizations are seemingly now magical and fantastical to the newer civilizations. The world is not whole, but in fact shattered into many floating islands, and people are mysteriously "chained" to the core of the planet at birth, by corporeal means but works very much as physical means. If you've read all this and are interested in joining, feel free to hit me up on Discord.  - Kal#7666
Character Concept: "What are these twisted strands of light and dark that bind us to the mother's womb once more...? But a reminder that from the very start of our warm, humble beginnings... the cold, bitter endings have already been written." - Poetician Hugh Low  In the world of Arcadia, you are born with a ethereal cord that connects you to the core of the shattered planet. Although corporeal in nature, the "chains" are very much real, physical and limiting. These chains act like a planet's gravity, also they act as a karma counter, and ultimately as a death timer. Instead of "dying", characters will be pulled through each of the layers until they are reunited with the "Core" or perhaps, they will be able to write their own destinies by breaking their own chains. *GM's Notes*  In Numenera, creating characters is a bit different that other systems. Since it's a more narrative focused system, each character will be formed from a "descriptor", "type", and "focus".  In other words, your character can very vaguely be summarized as a single sentence. "I am a [descriptor] [type] who [focus]." i.e.  “I am a Rugged Glaive  who Controls Beasts” The list of descriptors, types and focuses are located in the player's handbook "Numemera Discovery", the newest edition of Numenera. (If you can't find this, let me know) Don't worry, creating characters is easy enough and getting right into the action is just as equally easy!
