Everard - who by reputation certainly lives up to his name - might make a Scout; Young Miles is keen and shows potential. Godfrey is a big sturdy chap but rather slow.  Over her first two days at the Hall, Gundred knocks some heads together and stamps out the bullying (of Jocelyn). She gets the impression Jocelyn is fairly intelligent and could be a good soldier if he can rebuild his confidence. Viola looks frustrated. "It's ridiculous! Someone built a 15' wall with towers and battlements, then they just stopped! Anything could get through here!" _______________________ In Damara, south-west Duchy of Carmathan, a day's ride south of Valls (Arcata) and west of Ravensburg (Carmathan). Formerly the failing D'Ashe Manor, now a thriving rural Festhall.  There are typically some 18-20 Festhall girls at the Hall, overseen by Will 'the Weasel'. Most domestic duties such as cooking and cleaning are carried out by the girls. There are also three stablehands (Tom, Ostler, Jorias) and a blacksmith (Horm), who dwell outside the manor hall itself. Most 'entertaining' is carried out on the ground floor using the former servant's quarters, the great hall, and other converted rooms, while Lady D'Ashe keeps the upper floor for herself and her retainers. The cellars are used for storage, and can be accessed via a back stairway that runs from the cellars, behind the kitchen, up to the upper levels. The kitchen is not normally guarded. On a typical day a girl brings in 2gp gross (including customer purchases of accommodation, food, & drink), 1gp to her & 1 gp to the Hall, which with 18 girls & outgoings of 14gp/day gives you a typical profit of 4gp/day.  If they kept all their nookie money the Hall's income would halve to around 9gp/day, giving a deficit of -5 gp/day. Typical girl generates 20 sp/day, of which Nookie is 10sp. Hall takes takes half the food & accommodation income (5sp) as profit, & takes half the nookie money (5sp).  Outgoings could be reduced by eg making PCs drink small beer & eat gruel (or spend money on upkeep); those numbers assume the PCs and senior NPCs all enjoy a 'comfortable' lifestyle.  _____________________________ Dusk has fallen when you leave woodland for open moor and see ahead the warm lights of a large fortified manor house, a quarter mile off. An outer stone wall surrounds manor house, stable, barn and smithy.  Araunil Halfelven: "That must be what Kramskoi called Gurzun's Festhall - what was the D'Ashe Manor. Lord D'Ashe died with King Virdin at the Ford of Goliad two years ago... I suppose his wife must have sold the estate. The name Gurzun does seem somewhat familiar - a mercenary captain of the Duke of Arcata, I think. He would have been with Arcatan army Baron Dragonsbane defeated at Bloodstone Pass. I expect he lost employment after that debacle..." You approach and speak with the stablehands. The two roan stallions they are tending look very fine; the saddles and tack they are cleaning, even moreso, though well worn. They take your own horses for feeding & tending (Araunil hands over 2 gp for the 10 horses) and happily agree to let Araunil and Dara bed down for the night in the loft of the stable for an extra 1 silver each; Araunil pays and she & Dara can leave their horses in the stables and ascend the ladder to the loft. No fires allowed in the stable block, but there are well over a score of horses in there now and plenty of straw; it's warm enough and the loft is fairly clean. Kade Norrin & Rexx approach the heavy oak front doors of the manor up three stone steps, and Rexx pulls the bell chain; a bell tolls. After a short delay the double doors open and you see a pair of very buxom wenches in black & white corsets, their breasts bare. Rexx Vartal's eyes widen appreciatively at the sight. The wenches smile in greeting.  The blonde wench speaks: "Welcome weary travellers, to Gurzun's Hall. We have drink, food, bed and bath - and all other pleasures such as you might seek!" Behind them & to the right in the 10' deep entryway a second set of oak doors are closed, keeping out the cold night wind. Light shines from beneath these doors, and you hear the sound of music - very well played indeed - and revelry. "Please come in out of night's chill!" She gestures, inviting the men inside. ____________________________ "Lady D'Ashe, might I trouble you to store some money for me, please?" If Barbara agrees, he hands over a chest containing 600gp. "Just in case, you understand. Should I fall in battle, I wish for 50 gold to be given to each member of the party, with the remainder split equally between Jyrdani and Syrus.
