3d environments

the tokens overlap when they are in the same square. because there is no 3d environment stuff flying/burrowing/swarm/tiny creature tokens all overlap. as a fix i think a few extra layers for the game would be useful. these layers would need to be viewable by players and gms assuming that character can see that part of the map. i was thinking these layers would be tied to either the token or map layers.this would make it easier to deal with creatures like flying/burrowing creatures that are occupying the same square as another creature.

I think that this could also work with a sort of "overmap" layer for thing like trees and shadows, where there is a second map layer above tokens that they can go underneath

thanks i was just wanting a solution but the trees and shadows idea also seems to work. i just think it would add a bit more diversity to combat if players could interact with tokens that are burrowing/flying/swarming/have such small creature size they have to be in the same square to attack. did not even think about the trees and shadows. figured shadows would be under dynamic lighting and the trees would probally be part of the normal map but climbable objects would be cool if tokens didnt either overlap the image layering or had their own special layer

It's already been announced that a new layer is coming, though I hope they add a few more layers right away. I would prefer a much larger range of layers myself, say 10 to 20, but I assume that each layer adds to the workload.

I think it'd be preeeetty sweet if Roll20 had a function that allowed the DM to get a 2.5D view, with each layer spread a tile apart from below to let you see what's on which layer. Sort of like a blueprint.

sweet i did not know that they already planned on new layers and if they made it 2.5d like your blue print idea would be what we need it would solve the problem

A type of 3D environment that is already currently available on Roll20 is called the isometric grid.

It is under Page Settings.

The planned new layer I've heard of is an "effects" or "atmosphere" layer (for stuff like fog you want above the tokens), so it's not really addressing the desire for dimensionality for player tokens.

It's a good suggestion: "send to front" can put the "right" token on top, but it doesn't help a player who can't see which token is under another.

@gold any more details about this isometric grid? will it help with what i was asking about?
@ken S.  i guess thats still a cool functionality setting but kind of wish it was able to help more

the way i currently get around this issue is to send creatures to map or gm layer temp to move them out of the way so i can see the token i need but this slows down combat and can get confusing to players
