Transparent Portions of Uploaded Tokens

Hello there, I'm new here but I'm excited about using Roll20 for my live stream campaign. I'm considering using Roll20 as my overhead camera shot. It would be perfect! For the tabletop I will be using images from the real in house table top, and the same goes for the props. I would like to do the same with the miniatures. However, when I upload an image for a token with transparent portions, those portions translate to white on the virtual table top. Is this even possible, or should I avoid this?

you need to convert them to png files and make the background transparent, paint.net is what I use, photoshop can do it as can a hundred other programs. JPGs can't have transparent areas, that is the usual format for maps etc. for compression, a png can be three times the size of a jpg, but if you want transparencies you need to use png files.

GIMP works well for this as well. Color>Color to Alpha ... done.

For anyone else that finds this thread thought I'd toss in my own answer. I had this problem as well and taught myself how to use GIMP. The thing you are looking for is an Alpha Channel which will show as a checkered background. Look for 'Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha'. There is more to do depending on exactly what you want, but at this point it's advisable to dive into YouTube video tutorials for the specifics. One thing to note is you cannot use JPG for this and must use PNGs (well, there may be some JPG variants, but just go with the PNG). I use a Mac and GIMP has worked out really well for me.
