The one thing I will say about alternate characters is, s#@t happens. The goal of the GM is not to kill characters, the goal of the monsters is to kill characters, I would probably only intervene at this point to avoid a TPK. So, if you are not in the first 33% to die on a mission, I will probably try to get you out of the jam... Some people prefer to not "jinx" their character by having an understudy waiting in the wings, It doesn't take long to set up a character, so one can wait.
