Call of Cthulhu Old West: "Shadows of the Sierras" - weekend night PST

Greetniks, fellow escapists. Are you a DnD player looking to play another genre for a change? Or maybe a Call of Cthulhu fan who might be interested in a time period different than 20’s and 30’s stuff? Then stick with me here a bit… Besides DnD and a couple of other beloved genres, in the past I ran several successful Call of Cthulhu campaigns. Those were always 1920’s or 30’s settings, but I have long wanted to do other historic eras (Victorian England, Ancient Rome, etc). So I thought I’d start with an old west jam. I’m not an old west nut, but I do have a handful of old favorite movies and shows that come on the tube now and again or on streaming. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and gritty deconstructions of the more classic genre. Magnificent Seven (as close to a character party you will find in a western) for good guy/anti-hero, almost super heroic daring do. Or more modern stuff like Raimi’s goofy but fun Quick and the Dead, Bone Tomahawk, or shows like Deadwood. Or even comics like Jonah Hex and such.  In the campaign I would not be paying homage to the time period so much as just having supernatural perils, weird happenings, and investigations like any CoC game but in a different setting. Gunmen and rifle toting ranchers or such would be good, but also would hope for a big enough group to see more non-gunmen like journalists, academics, railway hobos, mountain men, miners, bartenders, bob vivant adventure seekers, etc or others would all work great. A good mix of character types and player types make for great role play. Call of Cthulhu is not meant as an action game, but this setting will call for more mortal dangers than normal, and some Pulp elements may be called for.  I run a game for adults (prefer 25 or older but can talk) but try not to get too gross or graphic. Unless the players want it, then… I would probably shoot for starting the first or second week of January.  A new campaign for the new year! Ideally play couple times a month or more when the stars are right. Start 6 or 7PM PACIFIC time and go up to three hours a session. A big plus as a cherished player would be the ability to be flexible and jump sessions around Fri-Sun nights if possible. Scheduling for nights the most can make it. I’m posting way ahead of time of this, and probably will again towards new years because may be a bit of a niche genre and I’d like a chance to make this a good full group.  Will start a Discord chat channel and invite the interested in a week or two. If you made it this far, you are interested! Feel free to comment here, or private me to tell me about yourself and what you like in a game and ask me any questions you might have. You can check my profile for more about my background and style. No applications needed! If you are interested in the game and seem cool then you probably pass the bench test! If you do up a character in “Dholes House” (I just discovered this awesome character creator) after we chat, and you have stuck around until after the holidays, I’ll know you are serious about joining the fun! (Note: I did an interest check a few months ago, but had to not follow through as I just was not ready to take a look at the latest edition, which was fairly different than the one I knew. If you contacted me with interest and still have it, then please reach out).
Still planning a January start!

Time 9s perfect for me as I run games 6pm to 9 pm pst, on my mornings here in Thailand.  Cannot do Fri sat. Sundays maybe, times are good... that is my Monday AM here in Thailand..I have of course used Dholes multiple times for pre gens for tabletop Call O C here in person. Sometimes might have to assist family oldsters with geriatric appts.. on Mondays, if so would have to skip, but could give notice. Ran a lot of Original 1st and 2nd Ed boot hill by TSR back in the day, as well as Gurps Old West, and Aces & Eights... loved that chargen, and building the towns.  So I know the tropes. I like the heads up planning. When I run a campaign I build it a month, then recruit a few weeks ahead, do up a session zero, and then launch. I recently came off of a 16 month cyberpunk red campaign as a GM. Been running two concurrent Star trek Adventures games, since August, two different ships, set in original series, as well as a solo captain's log Trek. Mon and Thu nights US. Three concepts: 1) A northerner teacher, "Malachai Jenkins", graduate of "The African Institute" near Philadelphia, trying to set himself up as a teacher of trades in the West. His family escaped from the Jenkins Plantation in Virginia to Pennsylvania through the UR, and got work in Pittsburgh. He went away to School at the first HBCU, on a Scholarship. The idea is that there is a vast opportunity to make a fortune out West, and he can send something home via Western Union to his parents, and little sister. 2) A gunfighter that is from Gettysburg, PA. He survived service with the 54th Mass including the Assault on Ft. Wagner. He goes by the Name "Slick". He would be more than happy to be a sheriff, if he could find a place to accept him. Fair minded, quiet. He knows horses, good with a rifle, and doesn't lack for courage.  A patriot, who has earned his freedom, fighting in the Civil War. 3) A bespectacled Minister from Western Pennsylvania, maybe the son of immigrants...on orders from a bishop to set forth and bring the word to the west. Wants to set up a small church, a guide a flock toward heaven in the life hereafter. Tall, northern European Ancestry.  "Pastor Johann Lehmann" I am a Producer of Indie films, voice actor, with credits on imdb for a feature and shorts I worked on, in Pittsburgh for a local prodco that started at my High School. Actor/ Roleplayers, fantasy and sci Fi cartographer. Gamer since 1977, starting with Traveller as a referee. Then Gamma World in 1978, 1e AD&D a year later. I have run and played most everything out there as a forever GM. Well met.
Sunday nights are not off the table, though would hope to be able to bounce around Fri-Sun depending on best availabilities.

Awesome. Glad to see interest picking up! For right now “gathering” interested folk, and probably in week or two (or less) invite all to a Discord where we can discuss the campaign and characters, and expectations. In the meantime we can keep in touch individually in the PMs on Roll20 until I set that up!  If you experiment with Dholes House, keep in mind We will prob use the point buy option, as well as the double hit point option. beginning equipment to be discussed. Getting hyped!
