My name is Jay. I have been playing dnd 5e for 6 years now and pbp for 3 years. Est is my timezone. My hobbies/interests are playing dnd, playing videogames, drawing, reading writing and watching TV. My favorite genre of fiction is horror, especially gothic horror. My favorite gothic horror book is Frankenstein because it is the progenitor of the notorious theme of how man must not try to emulate God in the creation of artificial life as it threatens the very stability of life. Additionally, I find it interesting how Frankenstein is also a tale about the destructive aspects of masculinity in that Victor Frankenstein wants to replicate life however his own hubris and his idea of the perfect being is shaped by his own destructive impulses and shallowness. He rejects his creation even though the monster is a reflection of his own flaws as a human being. Roleplaying is my favorite part of dnd because it gives me an opportunity to escape reality and use my imagination to create a wide variety of characters while engaging in storytelling with other players in an entertaining fantasy environment with endless possibilities of how I choose to play a role in the plot.I am a player who is heavily into roleplay. I'll spend time out of sessions researching formulating how to make my characters more engaging and complex. I usually play very eccentric characters that possess a unique way of thinking that is hard to grasp. I also try to make creative backstories that provide context into the personality and motivations of my characters. I am very into psychology and philosophy so I am sure to incorporate that into my character creation. When I play I try to really make sure that my characters actions are believeable and match what someone with their personality would do to make the game more immersive and enjoyable. I also make sure to choose my words wisely so that way they can leave a great impact in both the other players and the dm. I want my character to be profund in how others in the game view them so that way they have a lasting impression on them. I want people to enjoy playing with my character and find them interesting. I look for a thrilling game that has a decent amount of lore and world-building. I want the world the game to be an enriching experience in terms of story and I want it to be engaging as I play. I want the npcs and pcs to feel multifaceted and three dimensional with their own in depth personalities, backstories, quirks and faults. I also prefer a game where I feel as though I have real agency in my choices. What I mean is that, I want a world that allows for me to have free reign to give it that open world feel. Naturally, I expect that world to have consequences, both negative and positive for certain actions to add to the realism. If I am intelligent and or cunning in my decision making then I like to be rewarded. Likewise, if I do something brash and careless, I expect to suffer the consequences. I want a world where I feel as though my agency has great influence in plot advancement and provides me with many opportunities for character development. I will often speak in the first person when roleplaying and carefully consider every action from an in-character perspective. I often come into the game with a robust character backstory and concept and will be best satisfied by games where this information is always at the forefront . I'm looking for an exciting campaign that has intricate politics deeply interwoven into it. Especially if the setting is very unorthodox the setting is compared to official dnd modules. I love games where there are a number of different factions, locations, warring groups etc. I really love sandbox dnd games because they tend to be very immersive and enjoyable. I love worlds that have multitude of different paths I can take as it provides countless roleplaying opportunities. I love dnd games that have different factions all fighting for supremacy as it adds a type of realism to the campaign and challenges me to be more strategic in my roleplaying. I have to be more cautious of what I do and say as my actions will have severe consequences if I am not careful. I love dnd games where I have to be methodical in order to achieve my objectives as I find it very engaging as well as fun. Frankenstein is my favorite gothic horror book as it is a telling of how negative nature and nurture can creature a rampaging monster. It is a fascinating story because it is an intriguing subversive analogy of the the creation of Man in the book of Genesis. The monster is a parallel for Adam and Victor Frankenstein is a parallel for God. However, Victor is a human who lacks the divine power of God so when he plays god and attempts to create human life, the monster is born as a an abomination as Victor is not qualified enough to create a being. Another similarity is they both reject their creations, albeit for different reasons. Frankenstein and the monster also parallel the greek story of Prometheus as the monster and Promethus represent being liberated from one's creator. Also, both Prometheus and Victor took something that belong to their respective gods leading to dire consequences for them. For Prometheus it was the Fire of Zeus and for Victor it was the gift of life. Additionally, the story is a fascinating interpretation of the scientific method as Victor uses unorthodox and unethical procedures to create the monster. Im interested in this campaign because it is gothic horror with is my favorite subgenre of my favorite genre of fiction. Horror is the most visceral genre because it triggers one of our most primal emotions as humans fear. Gothic horror is a genre that utilizes the macabre and often times supernatural to force characters to be exposed to the darker aspects of life or humanity that we try to suppress due to fear, whether it is external or internal. Horror themes of good and evil and how good and evil are defined based on the author's beliefs and values, which often reflect the distinct fears of their respective culture's. Such an example is how Frankenstein is a subversive analogy of the creation of man in the book of genesis, conveying how man should not play God, because there will be irreparable consequences. They allow the audience to explore a different type of world through their imagination and the writers imagination showing hidden desires or curiosity. Additionally interesting how gothic horror combines both horror and romance so gives a very different twist to the usual romance story, revealing how the two often integrate and the darker aspects of relationships not often displayed by conventional fiction/media. Frankenstein shows how Victor loves his fiance Elizabeth but it is a possessive love as he sees her as his property and not her own autonomous being. Gothic horror plays with minds and causes the audience to question reality. Are such unexplainable occurrences supernatural or preternatural. I love vampires, because to me they represent a juxtaposition between freedom and subjugation. In Dracula, I believe vampirism as an allegory for female sexual liberation. As Lucy Westerna is confide to the puritanical norms of female chastity and marriage of Victorin England, through Dracula she is freed from such restrictve social expectations and experience a new form of self actualization. However, through the use of a symbolically phallic as well as sexually intense imagery, Van hellsing and the other men kill her and the other brides for defying their subjugation. Additionally, Dracula frees his brides from their own subjugation to replace it with his own as they become in a sense an extension of him, his property and lose their newfound freedom. It's a very paradoxical situation to be in. I find vampires so complex and interesting as they are often allegories for very intriguing social phenomenon. My favorite gothic horror trope is the juxtaposition between humans and vampires and the quintessence of vampirism. We are all part of the life cycle. Like a seed we are born, we sprout, we grow, we mature and decay, making room for future generations who, like seedlings, are reborn through us. As for the persistence of consciousness, deep down, I thought, “How can we know?” Perhaps we simply return to the elements; we become earth and air and fire and water. Whereas the vampires of myth and literature embody some of that same tension we as humans have regarding death. They have near immortality, and yet are tragically frozen in time. They cannot grow and change like the seasons, or, in most descriptions, birth new life, and yet they have super powers and strength and often the wisdom that can come with extreme age–an often cynical, jaundiced view of life. Humans want to be part of nature, and yet we still want to push the edge of the envelope, seeking to be more. Vampires let us play with death and the issue of mortality. They let us ponder what it would mean to be truly long lived. They allow us to ask questions we usually bury, except in science fiction. What does one value more and what does one value less with a short human life? Is the vampire’s frozen “life” sterile? Does life only mean something when it is part of a cycle of birth, growth, decay, death and the birth of new life? Is there a beauty that comes only from the cycles of the seasons of which we are a part of. My character concepts are: The circumstances of my birth are rather unique to say the least. From what I have been told, my mother was a lowly maid that was in love with her employer’s son. A wealthy nobleman named Alexander Greymark who was known for being kind and compassionate and they were in love. However, he was already engaged to another noble woman and Alex was too meek to deny his parents. In her desperation, my mother went to a dark witch named Katherine in order to get a potion that would make him have the courage to do as his heart desires. She gave the potion to Alex saying it would give him the bravery to stand up to his strict parents. He called off the engagement and proposed to my mother instead, making her extremely happy. It was the only time in her life she was ever really happy. His parents were enraged by this and forbade them from marrying, warning Alex that if he married my mother he would be cast out of the family. Alex left with my mother and they eloped getting married at the age of seventeen. My mother caught the eye of another man who wished to court her. In a fit of jealousy, Alex challenged that man to a duel. After the other man lost, my father killed the man in cold blood after he yielded and begged for mercy. Horrified, my mother went back to Katherine and asked what went wrong, Katherine said nothing and that as she said, Alex became madly in love with her, to the point that he went mad. My mother demanded a cure, saying she would pay any price. Katherine said that there is no cure as love is not a curse. When my mother returned, she had discovered that Alex had also killed his parents, who were attempting to get their marriage annulled. To stop him from killing anyone else, my mother killed him in his sleep. She cursed the witch to eternal torment before she turned herself in to the authorities confessing to everything. My mother was executed for her crimes and I was cut from my mother’s womb. Initially, I appeared dead until a woman clutched my unresponsive body and sang an old hymn to me. Miraculously, I had woken up, born in a blood moon, and was taken in by Elena, the town mad woman who had lost her stillborn child. She named me Amatis after her stillborn daughter and raised me in solitude. All I had were my dolls,my familiar Nevermore, my Chimera twin Cat Lavenza Theodore that I have a telepathic link to and my quori spirit, Kaliah that grew stronger as I grew older. One day, I was able to escape my home and ran away after reading my adoptive mother’s diary, discovering I wasn’t her biological child. I looked for my mother, but all I saw was an unmarked grave. Whereas my father was buried with his parents in the family’s estate. There I met my aunt Vivenne, who had informed me about the circumstances surrounding my parents marriage, deaths and my birth. The church examined my body and discovered that the blood moon gave my quori spirit enough power to merge it’s soul with mine, allowing me to survive my mother’s death at the cost of Kaliah having some control over my psyche in certain circumstances. When I asked, she hesitantly told me where Katherine was last located, but pleaded for me to seek revenge as I would just corrupt my soul. I ignored her, and wasted no time racing to find her. I spent 5 long years looking for her only to find her on her deathbed, dying from the flu in her old age. When I confronted her, she was so delirious she did not remember my parents and the evil acts she had committed. She confused me for her sister, who died when she was young, saying how much she missed Tatia. She cried and was able to die peacefully at that moment, denying me the right to complete my life’s mission. When I returned to the church, I had told Vivienne her what had happened. She told me that my mother had been sent to an insane asylum after she had a violent episode when I had escaped, leading to her being taken in. Elena has one month before the doctors lobotomize her to try to heal her mind. She offered me a home in her church as a cleric to properly heal the mind of my adoptive mother Elena and start a new life with them. So that is what I plan to do. I took an oath to become a prophecy cleric under the Divination demigod Savras and lost my sight to obtain his gifts. I am desperately searching for a means to cure my mother as well as myself. Kalashtar Cleric/warlock The circumstances surrounding my birth and life are bizarre to say the least. I was an orphan found in a musical theater house in the Entertainment District. Allegedly, my biological mother was a foreign fey woman named Beatrix who was a prostitute that could not raise me. She was born from a group of people from a foreign continent. She gave me to a close friend named Tatianah to raise me as she couldn’t afford to be a mother. She begged her best friend Tati to never reveal her identity to me or tell me where she resided because she was ashamed of who she became and could not bear to meet the daughter she felt that she abandoned. She disappeared never to be seen by her loved ones again. She never revealed who my biological father is, even to Tatianah. Tatianah raised me for many years teaching me how to be a performer. She wanted me to be a teaching bard for teens and children, but I desired to be a traveling harlequin and see the world, maybe find my mother. However, I loved my adoptive mother dearly so I abided by her rules. I wore a special disguise to appear human as I did not want to draw unwanted attention as a foreign human-fey hybrid. One day our group was meant to perform for the son of a powerful Feudal Lord who owned his own province. He said that he wanted to see me perform as I was his favorite entertainer. I was so surprised and flattered, especially since I was a rather mediocre bard. I practiced for weeks and did a spectacular performance that brought my mother to tears. The prince was so amazed he asked me to be his own personal performer for a year and then he would give my family our own theatre and my own traveling circus. I was thrilled but my mother wanted me to stay with her as she did not trust the aristocracy. If only I had listened to her, maybe things would have turned out differently. It turned out the lord’s son was really a serial killer of a beautiful young woman. When I performed at his personal chambers, he suffocated and then killed me using the blade he used to kill all of his female victims, beheading me and keeping my original head as a souvenir. However, the sword jammed in between my ribs and would not release so he just buried me in a cemetery near where my mother lived in an unmarked grave as a sick joke. However, the souls of all his victims used their spectral powers to ressurect me and give me a new detachable head to replace my stolen one. I plan to kill the prince and his court that helps him commit and hide his crimes, find my biological mother and then die in peace once I find my true head, I can’t slumber properly without it.
