Hey folks,
In our investigation we've found that this issue does seem to have a strong regional correlation to users located in Germany. For those we've been able to discern ISPs from, it has been "Deutsche Telekom" in reported cases thus far.
The exact cause of this is unknown but implies some interruption in the series of connections to access image data. As a shortened version:
Your Device <> Router <> ISP <> Image hosting
There are a variety of intermediary steps beyond what is above that help manage the communication between all these pieces to load images and maps. An interruption or slow down at any of them could result in this behavior.
Options we've seen have some success:
- Enabling a VPN and spoofing a different region
- Using a mobile hotspot or different network
- Restarting your router
- Changing your DNS settings. Common examples known to work with Roll20 include:
- Flushing DNS
- Windows users: Open Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotes)
- Mac users: Open Terminal and within the prompt type "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder && echo macOS DNS Cache Reset" (without the quotes)
- Resetting your router to factory settings
These are not surefire ways to resolve the issue, and your success may vary.
If issues persist, we would recommend reaching out to your ISP directly to see if they may have insight that they can provide on the nature of the issue. For reference, services that might have an impact on image related issues would be:
- Amazon Web Services
- Amazon CloudFront
- Google Firebase
We are continuing to investigate from our end to find any solutions that we can from our end!
