[LFP](2 slots) GURPS 4e - 1988 X-Files meets True Detective

# Introducing: “The Q-Cases” ## A GURPS 4e Tabletop RPG Adventure *Cue eerie music and the slow, suspenseful zoom-in of a foggy wilderness at dusk. The camera pans across a desolate highway, empty save for the flickering lights of a distant ranger’s station and the glint of a solitary FBI badge resting on the dashboard of a parked car. A low hum echoes in the distance… something is out there.* Welcome to "The Q-Cases," a tabletop role-playing experience where the unexplained becomes reality, and the darkest corners of the human mind are only the beginning. Set in 1988, this GURPS 4th edition campaign follows a shadowy team from the Department of Justice—the Psychological, Physiological, and Social Crimes Special Investigations Task Force, or **DoJ’s PPS CSI Task Force**—assembled to investigate a series of bizarre, often terrifying events that have gone unnoticed—or worse, actively suppressed—by traditional law enforcement. Think of it as a blend between The X-Files and True Detective, with a dose of Twin Peaks thrown in for good measure. But here's the catch: the supernatural may not be the biggest danger you face. Amidst the cryptids, cults, and vanishing towns, something deeper lurks—something tied to corrupt officials, hidden agendas, and people desperate to maintain control over forces they can’t fully understand. ### The Setting: 1988 America – A Time of Shadows and Secrets The campaign unfolds in rural, isolated pockets of the United States, from the mist-shrouded mountains of Appalachia to the forgotten, eerie stretches of national parks. These places have all seen something… strange. Events that the public brushes off as urban legends, but you know better. A block in Philadelphia disappears for 27 minutes. A family vanishes while camping in the Rockies, leaving only cryptic messages carved into trees. And now, a young woman in a remote mountain town says she’s being hunted by something that only moves in the mist. You’ll be part of a small team—hastily assembled by the DoJ’s PPS CSI Task Force—sent to investigate, contain, and sometimes cover up these inexplicable occurrences. But even among your team, trust is hard to come by. Every agent has their secrets, and as the mysteries deepen, it becomes clear that someone (or something) is manipulating events from behind the scenes. ### Your Role: Who Will You Be? We’re looking for a couple of key players to fill out our team. If you’ve got the guts, the curiosity, and a healthy skepticism of the "official" story, we want you. We're especially seeking: > * An FBI Investigator: A sharp, by-the-book agent trying to balance following orders with uncovering the truth. You’ve seen cases get buried before, but this time it feels… different. You’ll be the team’s voice of reason and legal expertise, but how far are you willing to go when the law doesn’t seem to apply? > * A US Park Ranger: A local with deep ties to the wilderness, you know these remote areas better than anyone. You’ve heard the stories—the ones tourists laugh off—but you’ve seen enough to know there’s truth to them. You're the team’s survival expert and often their guide into places where few dare tread. Together, you and your teammates will delve into mysteries that make local law enforcement shrug in confusion. But the real question is: who can you trust when every shadow feels like it’s watching? ### The Game: GURPS 4th Edition This campaign uses the GURPS 4e system (Generic Universal RolePlaying System), perfect for creating a realistic, gritty world where anything can happen. You’ll create a character with unique skills, background, and motivations to help the team survive whatever comes next. Will you rely on brute force, investigation skills, or something else entirely? We meet every other Tuesday to uncover the truth, share in the tension, and experience moments of victory—or disaster. Whether you’re new to GURPS or a seasoned player, there’s a place for you here. **Join us if you’re ready to confront the unknown.** *The fog is rising, and something waits on the other side.*
Oh wow, this sounds like a lot of fun. I love all the themes presented here, especially drawing influence from the various shows listed. I don't remember a ton from any of those shows per say, been ages but I love the style, themes and aspects of the genre a ton. I think I've played gurps before, may be confusing it with a different system so I might be rusty on the game itself but I'd love to throw my hat in the ring for playing the FBI agent, sounds the most intriguing out of the two options presented for a character concept and fits my alley quite a bit.
Hey, this sounds really awesome! About what time would this game on Tuesdays and how long would sessions run for?
Definitely interested depending on the time.  I've been known to play a park ranger once or twice.  :P
The group meets alternating Tuesdays, 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific. Usually goes 3 to 4 hours.
I'm interested. I'm free on Tuesdays. I'd prefer to play the FBI investigator.
Hello, I include cut scenes, sometimes to do flashbacks, sometimes to let the players aware of things the characters might not be aware of yet, and sometimes to share things that NPCs and PCs might have experienced 'off-camera'. Here is one such cut scene (included as an example of my style in running games and what to expect): Wintery Whispers Jack stepped outside, pulling his jacket closed a bit more but not bothering to zip it. He adjusted his hat then pulled out his pack and lighter. The snow had dropped down to just flurries and the clouds had started to scatter. As he flicked the lighter the snow seemed to absorb all the sound. He looked over and realized there was no traffic on the highway. As he smoked his cigarette, the snow stopped all together and Jack was looking at the breaks in the clouds to the few stars he could see when he heard it. Sounded like whispering right behind him! He spun, his cigarette somehow staying in his mouth as his hand went for his knife... but there was no one there. His heart was racing. 'Who had that been,' Jack thought to himself as he looked around. 'Only my tracks in the snow.' Just as he started to calm and breath more regularly, it came again, to distinct voices, whispering to each other. Jack froze and just kept listening as the ash started to grow precariously long. "...Shoes" was the only word from the first voice he could pick out. "...Work to do" was all he could make out from the other, but their whispered voices going back and forth, like too ice mosquitos frozenly buzzing in his ear. Taking a quiet breath, Jack looked around and there was no other person around as far as he could see. No traffic on the main road, none on the highway. The parking lot light for the hotel was the closest light, but here on the side, he was in shadow, but the snow reflected what little light there was, so he was sure if someone had been close enough for him to hear, he would have seen them. As he looked around, even the lights for the chair lift over at the ski resort were off and the chairlift stopped But there was no one but the body-less voices buzzing in his ear. The dead quiet of the snow covered night disturbed by the two voices. Finally the ash fell from Jack's forgot cigarette, the movement and maybe minute change in weight on his lips subconsciously alerting Jack. Jack took the butt from his mouth and flicked it into the snow some 10 feet away and almost had a heart attack as the sound of a semi sounding like it was barrelling down on him came... but spinning, he could see the lights and now hear that it was coming from the highway. in less than 60 seconds it was over half a mile away and its loud sound echoing around. Jack lit another cigarette, but the voices never returned. He finished his cigarette, not sure if he was happy or disappointed. The sounds of an occasional car or truck going up or down the highway, their lights reflecting off the snow covered signs, buildings, and slops near the highway. "19 days after New Years and not a drop since, that is when I start hearing things?" Jack says exasperatedly and heads back inside.
At this time, I have two people interested in the two spots in the game. If they decide to withdraw, I will update here.
