Friends?

September 26 (11 years ago)
Just wondering, but why does Roll20 not have any kind of friend list so you can easily keep track of people you play with and what they're currently playing? I'd like to add my friends on here as friends, but although you can block and send private messages you can't seem to befriend people. If a function like that is added, it'd also be nice to have a way to sort them; So I can sort my IRL friends from my online friends.

Also, I'm not aware if there's one or not but does Roll20 have an IRC or other kind of chatroom?

The only solution for that I've found is, start a Campaign (which is something Roll20 lets anyone do for free & unlimited). Send your Friends the invite to join your campaign. You'll have a little internal mini-forum, that sends Notifications to the membership, and you can use the chatroom you've created by doing this.

I know it's not the same as your Suggestion, just an alternative possible method that currently exists here for keeping track of Friends and communicating.

I realize that there are round-about methods, but honestly there should be proper functionality.

You've added the suggestion in the proper place. This suggestion has actually been brought up before.

I have no doubt it's not been mentioned, though it still has not been implemented or talked about by the developers so it's still an open topic.

At the school i'm at they actually filter Roll20 as a 'Social Network' website.

They use to have a live chat room but due to abuse it was removed. There is a roll20 google community and there is a roll20 reddit also.

How was it abused?

That detail is known only to mods and the devs along with the abusers. There was rumors and gossip going around for a while after it was removed about links to pirated material being passed around to cyber bullying up to one rumor I heard was about porn links being passed back and forth. All that is against the conduct code and they got tired of stuff being a constant problem so they eliminated the problem completely.

Some bad apples ruined it for the rest of us.

When I first turned up here (not that long ago) I was wondering the same thing! I think the creators should definitely look into having some sort of friends system. Although I understand why there is no longer a live chat.

Why not a live chat between friends or groups of friends?

That's happening right now. There are 1000's of those on here, any given day.

Once you enter a campaign, you'll see. Every Roll20 campaign contains a live chat, for any size group.

Oh I know about that, but why can't I open one with my friends on a whim?

You can. Just meet up in a campaign with said friends.

GenKitty is right, you can always meet up in a campaign with whoever wants to.

Reshy, have you tried starting a campaign yet, or entering one with your friends? (Your profile indicates you have not tried it yet, 0 campaigns & 0 hours).

It is a website for playing roleplaying games the same as people would on a tabletop in person. There are other chat services you can use if you are looking for chats without the roleplaying & gaming features (and you can use them in conjunction with your Roll20 group if you need more chats on the side along with your gaming for some reason). You can use a chatroom in the game campaigns whenever you want, for free, and you can open new campaigns for that, unlimited. I think it would satisfy what you've asked for here, if you try it.
