Jumpgate can't type [] with keyboard

Hey community, does anyone else have this problem that you can't type these characters [[]] on your keyboard when using jumpgate?

Hi Philipp! I have never encountered this, and not sure how Jumpgate would cause such an effect. It sounds more like browser level behavior. For context, you can't type this anywhere? Chat, Handout, Character Sheet, Modal Dialog Box?
Hello Keith Curtis, yes I can't type them anywhere. I am however able to copy/paste those characters. I assumed it is a Jumpgate bug since I am able to write them in a non-Jumpgate game. (I have a MacBook Air and I am using chrome)

I use Chrome on Mac and Chromebook, and the keys are working normally for me. Try opening your game in an incognito window, or testing with a different browser. That should eliminate most extension/bad browser data issues.

FWIW the square bracket keys work for me (Jumpgate or legacy, MacBook Pro M2 on Sequoia, Chrome, no extensions, US keyboard layout)
How strange. Maybe it's just my Mac?  (Switching to a different browser or using incognito window sadly doesn't work)

Check to make sure your keyboard layout has not been switched to an unexpected alternate layout. Strangely enough, while googling this issue, I do find it has been reported a couple of times (though not in relation to Roll20), usually in some code editor or other.

Thank you Keith his solved it !!! (kind of) It seems the problem was that my Mac has the German/Austrian keyboard where you've to press option+5 or option+6 for [ ]. Changing the input source to english solved the issue (the [ is ü and ] is +) For any germans/austrians/swiss you can change the input source by going to: System Settings -> Keyboard -> Text Input / Input Sources -> Edit -> (I recomend: All Input Sources -> Show input menu in menu bar -> activate) -> the small "+" icon in the lower left -> english -> add
Definitely a Jumpgate bug. I can reproduce this by using the German/Austrian keyboard layout. opt+5 and opt+6 then work for inputting square brackets in other Mac apps and in Roll20 legacy, but does nothing in Roll20 Jumpgate.

I've reported this.

Just reporting that this is still an issue in Jumpgate. Makes writing handouts so tedious, and there's not even a way to "downgrade" from Jumpgate, argh. Maybe I should have another look at what other VTTs there are in 2025...

keithcurtis said: What keyboard layout are you using? Finnish, as I am using a Finnish keyboard. I tried adding English also in addition to Finnish, but that didn't seem to help.

Hi JP,  I have asked a Finn I know to test this. But in the meantime, can you provide reproduction steps for the person to test?  The more precise the steps the better. Please include the browser being used, the text being entered, where you are typing it, etc.

Please include the browser being used, the text being entered, where you are typing it, etc. Mac OS X 14.6.1 and Chrome 133. (Also tried Firefox 135 and Safari 17.6, issue persists with all of them.) Launch a Jumpgate game as a GM  Add a Handout Edit created Handout Try adding a "[" (option 8) to "Name" => Nothing happens Try adding a "[" (option 8) to "Description & Notes" => Nothing happens Try adding a "[" (option 8) to the browser's location bar => Character is output normally Issue does not exist on a "classic" game (i.e. not Jumpgate). It's the same with all option-characters, f.ex. option-2 (@), option-3 (#), option-6 (&) etc. However: Create a new Folder Try adding a "[" (option 8) to "What do you want to call the new folder?" modal => Character is output normally Also tried a Character Sheet (the game in question in this case was Dune: Adventures in the Imperium ).  "[" (option 8) doesn't work on "Bio & Info" tab (f.ex. "Name" or "Bio & Info" fields), but works normally on the "Character Sheet" tab (f.ex. "Personality Traits" field). Just to make sure it has nothing to do with the character sheet / game, I tried creating a new jumpgate game with "D&D 5E 2014 by Roll20", same issue persists.
Thought to check browser's (Chrome 133) console, there are a few errors:
I have also encountered this Problem. I usually use Firefox - Browser. Once i changed to Chrome, this Problem occured. By using Jumpgate, i can't type "[", "|" or "}" - whether in Chat, Handout or Macro.  Other games without Jumpgate are no problem. This Problem seems to occur, when you have to simultaniously press STRG and Alt (aka CTRL and ALT) and another key, by using a german (or european??) keyboard. This Problem also occurs by using the Opera Browser.  Other Browsers I didn't check out, because Firefox is running Jumpgate smoothly by using german keyboard. I hope, I was able to help a bit.

Bat, have you tried using a different keyboard layout while on Roll20? JP, I'm not sure what advice to give here, other than to file a  Help Center Request . This is beyond the scope of community-level forum help. You could include the  Console Log ( Chrome , Firefox ), but I don't think any of those errors had anything to do with the issue at hand. Be sure to include the keyboard you use, since that seems to be the heart of the problem.

I believe this is a logged issue, but another report will give the problem weight. I have also filed an update to my report.
