Game converted to Jumpgate has performance error message

January 10 (3 weeks ago)

As a GM I recently converted my game to Jumpgate. When I log into the Jumpgate version I get a "We have detected that you may be using an unsupported system or browser, or that hardware acceleration may be disabled due to a setting in your browser or an installed extension" error message. I do not get this error if I log into the "legacy backup" version of the game. The error appears even if I reset the cache and login via an incognito window. I'm using an up to date version of Chrome (131.0.6778.265), an up to date OS (MacOS 15.2) and a fast computer (an Apple Mac Mini with an M4 Pro chip). I've verified that chrome's hardware acceleration is turned on. Here is the summary from chrome://gpu

  • Canvas: Hardware accelerated
  • Canvas out-of-process rasterization: Enabled
  • Direct Rendering Display Compositor: Disabled
  • Compositing: Hardware accelerated
  • Multiple Raster Threads: Enabled
  • OpenGL: Enabled
  • Rasterization: Hardware accelerated
  • Raw Draw: Disabled
  • Skia Graphite: Disabled
  • Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
  • Video Encode: Hardware accelerated
  • WebGL: Hardware accelerated
  • WebGL2: Hardware accelerated
  • WebGPU: Hardware accelerated
  • *WebNN: Disabled

Any ideas as to what might be causing the problem?

Hi Richard!

You might have better luck getting an authoritative answer by sending that info directly to the team in a Help Center Request. Forum help is almost completely community-level help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did indeed file a help center request / bug report at the time I posted in the forum — I just thought someone else may have seen the same thing or had a suggestion on what I might be doing wrong. It's very strange to be getting the "Graphics Performance Notification" error in Chrome on what looks like (at least to me) my relatively lightweight "landing" page for the game. To be clear, the actual performance of the page seems fine. The error does not appear on much larger pages, nor on pages with many more tokens. For whatever reason, the error only appears in Chrome, it does not occur in Firefox.

Edit: the request number for the help center request is #288421.

As a test I created a completely new game, added an empty page to the new game, and set it as the current page. If I log in I see that page and don't get the "Graphics Performance Notification" error in Chrome. If I turn on either "Dynamic Lighting" or "Hide/Reveal Mask" for the new page (with or without DL) I get the "Graphics Performance Notification" error for the new page, despite the page having no lighting objects or masks.

So, perhaps it has something to do with Roll20 not recognizing the GPU in Apple's M4 Pro chip when using Chrome?

Could be. I don't get it on the M1, but that's not a definitive catch.

I got it on my brand new Mac mini M4 Pro using a Firefox Private Browsing window.

I'd suggest filing a Help Center Request with this info.

Today I can't replicate this, of course. So no Help Center Request from me.

I can easily reproduce the "Graphics Performance Notification" error in Chrome on my Mac mini M4 Pro using a new game with an empty page with Dynamic Lighting turned on. I haven't been able to make it happen in Firefox.

I tried with Chrome Incognito too, and I can reproduce it, so I've made a Help Center Request:

For others encountering this issue, Roll20 support responded to my help center request today, saying that this is being looked into by the dev team and that in the meantime it is safe to ignore the warning.
