The rules for having multiple characters is a bit complex. You are welcome to create as many alternative characters as you want, however in most cases you will only be able to play one of those characters at a time. There are two categories of player characters: Primary Player Characters , these are the normal characters players create. They start at level 1, can choose any class, and are freshly introduced to the game. They may hire retainers. Companions , these are mercenaries that survive an adventure, who have pledged their loyalty to the service of the player character. They must first make a reaction roll to see if they will follow the player character, and if successful they can be given xp so they can level up to 1. A player may only have one companion. A companion may only become a fighting-man. Companions retain their original name, but can be given nick-names. When a companion reaches level 1 they become a loyal companion of the primary character who originally hired them, and the player should create a character sheet for them and roll stats, buy equipment, etc. They do not get starting gold, and possess only what has been given to them. They may only go on adventures when the primary character is present. The companion MUST pay their own weekly upkeep costs, unless the DM does not allow them to participate that week. A companion may replace the Primary Character if the Primary Character is dead for good. This means the companion becomes a primary player character. Experience may be shared with a companion in any proportion that the player desires. Gold must be shared equally with the Primary Character at the end of an adventure. Ex: John earns 500gp as his share at the end of a session, he must subtract and share 250gp to give to his companion. Companions can't hire other retainers while serving as a companion; however the primary player character can, although the companion will count towards the maximum.
