There are three types of retainers: Mercenaries, these are men that are skilled in combat and can be retained from week to week, or leveled up into Companions. 1d6 are present at a time in Stilt Town. Hirelings, these are unskilled men such as cooks, porters, and torch bearers. Porters in particular are really good for helping to carry treasure from a dungeon back to town. They may be retained from week to week. 1d6 are present at a time in Stilt Town. Henchmen, these are leveled adventurers and will only serve a character that is at least 1 level higher than them. They have higher upkeep and costs, and may be retained from week to week. There is a 1 in 6 chance that a Henchman character will be in town seeking work. Normally you will need to sit down with a retainer and buy them a drink to get them talking with you, then you will need to negotiate the terms of short-term employment. If successful, the retainer will follow you for the adventure; but they may run away or refuse certain orders. At the end of the adventure you can negotiate with them again for long-term service, and if accepted, their costs will be added to your weekly maintenance costs. Retainers will not carry their gold with them into adventures, so do not think to simply loot them should they meet an unfortunate end.
