Map overlays itself and lighting flickers

Hey there, when I scroll on some maps, I will get an overlay of the map on itself. The lighting also flickers while I scroll down. These maps have Dynamic Lighting enabled, though no amount of tinkering with settings within the DL makes the flickering-on-scroll stop. I have tried disabling all extensions, updating my browser, restarting my computer, and clearing my cache (ctrl+f5). The cache clear helps the map overlay, but I still have the flickering issue. I am not using Jumpgate and do not want to upgrade this particular campaign. How do I resolve this issue? My players are experiencing it too.

Hi Adrian! Is the map an exceedingly large graphic? If so, it might be more performant to slice it up externally and piece it back together within Roll20.

I don't know what would qualify as exceedingly large, but I don't think so. It is the official Tomb of Annihilation mod, with virtually no edits done to the maps themselves. The map we first noticed it on was Hrakhamar, a few weeks ago. However, I'm flipping through other maps and it's happening on basically all of them, including ones we've already been to.

If you want to point out a map where you consistently get this behavior, could you tell me the one. I will fire up a ToA game to see if I can reproduce the issue. Also, among your trouble shooting, have you tried a different browser, or a private browsing window? What browser are you using?
It happens on most of them, but we can just use Wyrmheart Mine, since it's what I've been looking at. Scrolling makes the lighting inconsistently bright, and there's a weird visual overlay effect with the map. I tried to get a picture but Roll20 errored me when I tried to post it. My browser is Firefox 137.0.2 (64-bit), though a player on Google Chrome experienced this. I do not know her version. Both of our laptops are high-end machines though, meant for gaming.

Posting a screen shot is not as straightforward as most are used to these days. It's old Bulletin Board style software which requires you to upload the image, rather than copying and pasting. You can copy and paste if you have copied from a source that is already an online image, but for something you create by yourself, like a screen shot, you need to either drag and drop or use the upload button. Pasting will look like it works, but the image won't be saved when you submit the post. I'll take a look and see if I can reproduce the flicker you have described.

OK, on the module I just installed, panning looks pretty smooth, with nothing that I would call a "flicker".  Do you have Hardware Acceleration turned on?  There are some graphics settings you can fiddle with, but I have a four year old computer (M1 Mac Mini), with everything on default.
I don't even have that settings menu for this game. I don't know if those are Jumpgate, but this game is not Jumpgate. My only options are FPS (set to 30, never touched it), enabled animated graphics (enabled), hover to show token nameplate and bar overlay (disabled), and disable auto sizing of assets dropped on the Map layer (disabled).

I suppose they must be Jumpgate, sorry. I forgot you said that in the top post, and I tested there. I'll be glad when all of these technologies are matured to the point where the old options are retired.

OK, I just created the same game on Classic. The panning is noticeably less smooth than on Jumpgate. To be fair, this is one of the many reasons why Jumpgate was created. Also, while the panning is inferior, I am not seeing a huge difference when using the mouse scroll wheel, and I still don't see the flickering you've described. I am at  loss to explain the issue you are experiencing. It might be best to capture a  Console Log ( Chrome , Firefox ) and file a  Help Center Request , to get real dev attention on this. I understand that you do not wish to migrate this game to Jumpgate, and I respect your decision. If you don't mind though, can you share the reasons for not wanting to do so? I've been on Jumpgate for months now and have found it a much more pleasing experience.
Simply, it's just because the adventure was made on Classic, and I am worried about any issues arising from the transfer. I intend to use Jumpgate for my next game I run. :) No beef with it, I just don't like to shift stuff mid-game if I can help it. I'll go about the Console Log and help center. Thank you so much for your input!

No worries! If you do decide to dip your toes into Jumpgate at some point, you can duplicate your game from the home screen, and set the duplicate to be Jumpgate. It will even copy over players. Your original game will be untouched.

Just to add to this I've had this happen to myself; as have many other players/GMs I know. I've talked to users who have said it's happening in Jump Gate, and Classic (I haven't used Jump Gate very much). It's quite odd as it seems to vary week by week, and it's not consistent across the group. Some weeks half the group will have constant issues with the flashing, and the next week the other half of the group will. It doesn't seem to be affected by the person's browser (some people I know say it happens more in Chrome though), but it seems to effect some maps worse than others. Map size doesn't seem to matter as I've seen it happen on tiny, and large maps. I want to say it started happening around the time when Roll20 released the new layer, but I don't know why that would also effect Classic games. I would also like to add that the flashing can be so extreme that it can make Roll20 almost unusable, and it's extremely dangerous to anyone who might experience seizures do to flashing. I personally have a cousin who could 100% have a seizure triggered by this sort of flashing. I'd appreciate it if y'all took this seriously as I'm sure there are vulnerable users out there who might not be aware of this potential issue. I know it's probably a little hard to nail down as it doesn't seem to be a consistent thing. I'll try to get a video of the glitch happening, but as I've said it's not consistent. I will add it to this thread when I do. Edit: A friend of mine has told me that if you disable animated graphics it seems to fix the issue (at least temporarily). Note that you might need to refresh/clear cache for this to take effect. I haven't been able to confirm if this is true yet.

Want to test an obscure theory, Adrian?  I have a theory the flicker could be related to Nameplate text/font/shadow rendering.  Try your Maps with no Nameplates and see if it still flickers on panning? Ways to turn-off Nameplates in Legacy (non-Jumpgate) could be either:  1. Enable the setting "Hoever to show Nameplates and bars", then try panning that same map.  OR 2. Simply edit every token on the map and uncheck Show Nameplate.  If anyone wants to test that and report if it relieves the issue on Legacy-Classic Roll20 ?  This theory is based on some statements that I saw Roll20 team members posted in other threads about working on optimizing Nameplate rendering and it could be either the pre-fix issue, or the fix itself causing a new issue. Or it could just be unrelated  On the Jumpgate side, they added a setting called "Hide Nameplate & Bar Settings on Pan / Zoom" which the drop-down is showing in keithcurtis' JG screenshot

Good to know, haha, I was wondering if my game was uniquely cursed. But yeah I can agree to all you've reported here, outside of confirming it happens in Jumpgate. We have decided to move the game to Jumpgate after making back-ups, so, we'll see what happens this week. As for when it started, yeah I wanna say about a month or two ago. Definitely really recent. We played a session today, and had some really bad issues. Animated tokens seemed to make it MUCH worse, but it happened either way. Using the effects that Roll20 has to offer also seemed to make it worse while the effect was playing too. Unchecking animated graphics seemed to help some people, and not others. No clue what's causing it, but it's horrendous with it happens. It also seemed to happen a lot more when zooming in/out, or moving tokens.
I will say that I've observed that the issue isn't present in Jumpgate, and the switch has mostly just given us lag on the ToA hex map but is otherwise great. No idea on legacy, though. :( Still present there.
