Beginner map question; picking the correct page size.

Hi all,

I'm a new GM to roll20 and I have a question about sizing the page. I got some maps off of patreon and the creator there put the map size in his post, except it doesn't specify what size is recommended for VTT. The sizes he lists are as follows: Grid Size - 22x34 (1" Grid). Resolution - 3080x4760 (140DPI). I'm assuming the grid size would be the map size, but I'm not sure. When I tried dragging and dropping the map onto a new page, it gave me the option to either resize the whole page or to resize the image. Since the map has 2 different floors, and I don't want these maps to take forever to load for my players; since having both floors on one page would make the height almost 10K pixels if I went by the resolution, any advice choosing the correct size would be helpful.

You’ll want to read about the best practices for files on Roll20, so you don’t use up your file quota too quickly.

Best Practices for Files on Roll20

I’m a Pro subscriber, so that’s not an issue for me, and I don’t run games that use grid maps, but there’ll be others along with more advice soon.

If you don't mind the possibility of compression artifacts (most people don't notice a small amount), I would suggest converting to jpeg before uploading. Uploads will be faster and take up less of your quota. Roll20 actually converts them to PNG upon upload, but only your upload file size counts against your quota.

70 pixels per grid square is the default size of graphics on Roll20. It's what they display at when at 100% zoom. Many module converters will upload maps at twice that resolution (140 pixels per printed map square). When they upload these, they will scale the uploaded graphic to half size, meaning that the user will see full resolution or better, even when zoomed in to 200%. There's little reason to do more than that, since zoom only goes to 250%.

In any case, maps that come to you at 300pixels per grid square are sized for offset printing. No one needs that much resolution on a VTT.

Actually helpful bit:

In your case, 140 pixels per unit (or "dpi") means that the designer probably designed for good resolution on Roll20 specifically. Set your page size to 1540 x 2380 pixels. or 22 x 34 units. When you upload the image and are given the option choose to resize the image to fit the page, and you are good to go. You'll have enough resolution to display at fill screen resolution or better up to 200%. Few people if any will notice the virtual scaling that happens at 250%.. If you have already uploaded the image, just grab the corner and snap it to the page edge.

Great, thank you
