Export Maps

July 10 (1 month ago)

With so many tiles in Roll20 making maps is great.

But having the ability to Export them so they can be added to handouts, printed, further edited in other editors, or even just exported and then re imported so it is a single map instead of many small tiles.

There is a lot of uses for exporting maps and it would add a ton of benefit from buying tile packs.  Perhaps as a Pro feature if the process would eat any bandwidth or have other similar technical strain, though I can't think of any reason it would.

An example of a use, right now I have a party with a bastion, I slowly add stuff to the map as they fill it decorate it and expand it. This causes a few issues though. the main one being that after a while the number of tiles causes map lag that gets worse as more stuff is added.

If I could export it I could easily make all the tiles a single map and remove this lag issue.

Have had many other times I would have loved to be able to export a map, such as making handouts that had part of the map as a image in it.

Print screen is a work around and one I have used, but quality wise it is far from a good work around. Something built in I am sure many would use and perhaps even encourage more people to buy map tiles thus helping the marketplace a little.

All assets on the map would need to be licensed appropriately.

thats simple enough, make it work only for the assets that can already be downloaded.

As it sits I have stopped buying new tiles only because when I use them it creates lag. So then I have to download them and put them together in some other program or simply only buy fully made maps or nothing. Is sad becouse the tiles could be great but when used with any volume they become pointless

That's interesting, how many tiles do you Place onto roll20 canvas before you begin to see lag? Is your game in Jumpgate Roll20 or classic?

On Jumpgate you shouldn't see lag from Roll20 Marketplace Map Tiles unless you are using 100+ tiles to create the map. Possibly depending on the size of each tile. The servers that house your Roll20 Marketplace purchased graphics are very very fast and performative.

I have no clue as I don't count them while I am making stuff, and yes jumpgate. players experience much less lag. Is on a higher end gaming Rig so plenty of performance capability from the PC, though I shudder to think what it would be like on a weaker machine.

Largely I stopped using tiles, just make single maps, when I do use tiles I remove grids, zoom out, and screen shot then upload so that it becomes a single image, it is a super big pain but doable when I really want to use the tiles
