Once a year, the Forgotten Realms’ leading scientists gather at the Masquerade of Brilliance to present top-secret inventions to investors. You are part of the Blackwell Trust, a network of scientists and investors participating in the Masquerade's competitive invention auction. This year’s Masquerade will conclude with the most curious invention of them all, a machine known as “the Pale Horse” that promises to transfer a Celestial creature’s soul into an automaton so that the Celestial’s power may be contained, controlled, and used for its master’s benefit. Minutes before the Pale Horse is scheduled for demonstration, the Masquerade's hostess Ms. Redwing announces that the automaton has gone missing. If you find the automaton and turn them in, the Blackwell Trust will be awarded a grant of 250,000 GP that you may use to bid on the invention of your choice. Discovering why the thing went missing will double that amount. You must not unmask any humanoid guests without permission while you investigate, or else you will forfeit your prize.
