mp4 maps being significantly downsized upon upload to library

I created an animated map thats 2mb in size, about 1600-1200 pixels. Every time I upload it to my roll20 library, it gets downsized to 1mb, too small for players to see the detail on the map. There doesnt seem to be any way to toggle this off. Its getting reduced to 1000x700 pixels and converted into a webm file. Why is it doing this? This makes animated maps unusable on roll20, and makes no sense since the max file size for a free account is 20mb and I have several maps uploaded already that are between 5-13 mb.

It is a process called Transcoding and it is a bit of a mystery as-to what settings Roll20 uses to transcode mp4 into webm. The bad news maybe: There is no way to turn that off, and no settings for the user to adjust what happens. The good news perhaps, should be: Roll20 creates 3 versions of it, called Thumb, Med, and Max (I believe, based on my research and testing). The 3 different versions should Show at different zoom levels. Maybe if you zoom in more closely, a larger more detailed version called Max will load? Try that and report back? For some official details go to this Help Center page and read the part about March 2025 updates to Animation uploads: https://help.roll20.net/hc/en-us/articles/360037256634-Best-Practices-for-Files-on-Roll20

I appreciate your response! unfortunately no, it is being uploaded as a single size, 1mb. There is no max above 1mb no matter how high the resolution of the video is because its being downsized significantly upon upload to the library. Zooming just makes it very blurry to a point where the map is almost unusable, which is frustrating cuz it means I will have to use a different VTT if I can't figure this out as I'd like to use animated maps in the future.
What is the storage total for a free anccount and are you close to that?…

Hi Valkyrye! Sometimes to get the image to appear at different resolutions, you actually have to zoom all the way out, and then back in. To check if you have more than one size, select the image and press "Z" to get the popup preview. Right click on that and either open it in a separate tab or download it. If the name contains "med", "thumb", "orig" or "max", then Roll20 is serving the various sizes, and it might just be a matter of triggering the display.

It contains the word med, how would I trigger the display?

Usually the zoom out as far as possible then zoom back in does the trick with static images. If that failed, I would delete cache and cookies, sign out of Roll20 and then back in. That should ensure that your browser is not trying to hold on to old information and force it to re-read the assets. If that fails, I would suggest grabbing a Console Log ( Chrome , Firefox ) and filing a Help Center Request .
