How to Move Silently/Hide/Backstab as Thief and non-thief.

Hiding (skill check only required in battle) Thieves May hide in battle using the Hide in Shadows skill, which takes about as long as an attack (can still move). This allows them to backstab the following round and no sneak check is required. The thief gets lost in the chaos of battle, using cover, positioning, smoke bombs, etc. to get behind their target or wherever. May hide outside of combat at any time by telling the DM they are hiding around in the shadows. This means the thief is hiding away from the group (30ft minimum) out of the torch light. Non-Thieves May only hide while outside of combat, and only if they have no shiny equipment on themselves or in their hands. If hiding when a monster walks by, they will remain undetected if monster is surprised; the monster will have a higher chance of being surprised (by 1). Moving Silently (skill check only required out-of-combat) Thieves Generally only needs to sneak outside of combat. If they make a successful Move Silently skill check, they are completely silent and can possibly backstab (if in position), and automatically gain surprise on an opponent. If the skill check is failed, they will remain undetected if the monster is surprised; and the monster will have a higher chance of being surprised (by 1). This means the thief can still backstab since they are undetected. Non-Thieves May only sneak while outside of combat, and only if they are not wearing rattling equipment, boots, armor, etc. If the character is sneaking up on something, the monster will have a higher chance of being surprised (by 1). Backstab Thieves May backstab only if attacking their target with a melee weapon while unseen from the rear. Gains a +4 "to hit" Deals double damage Can usually backstab the round after hiding in combat. Non-Thieves Don't get backstab. Restrictions to Hiding: Tight spaces or hallway with no-where to easily hide. Restrictions to Backstab: Cramped battle, where the enemy's body/s are blocking any movement past them. Any situation where the enemy's back is not exposed, such as having the wall at their back.
Is the party's light so bad, that there are always shadows to hide in? I've been imagining that its pretty bright, so that's why I haven't been trying to hide.
Yeah, so the other thing is that if you are hiding you are not in marching order. You're standing somewhere nearby, either ahead or behind or whatever. We'll work that out when we get to it. If you are not in marching order, you're not part of my roll to see who gets hit anyways. Torches also flicker and aren't that great at lighting things up, not sure if you've ever used a torch in real life. They are nothing like flashlights or light bulbs.
I shall endeavor to hide much more often then!
