So I was considering a few things about the resources bars and the like (saw a 4th was added in, super thrilled about that!) and I had an idea that might be pretty useful. See token bars are nice for a variety of reasons and depending on settings can be visible to multiple players or hidden and they can be put on enemies and all sorts of things can be used for them. It's great. But certain resources on a character sheet don't necessarily need to be visible directly on the token nor do they need to be visible to other people. I was thinking that maybe like we have the selected token buttons overlay we could have other features that pop up on a selected token to make it more convenient to access certain things without looking through the sheet or sending button prompts to the chat. For example health is a widely accepted value that is usually in some level visible on tokens (be it just allies or altogether), but something like say remaining ammo? That doesn't always need to be directly on the token. Could instead have a few resource bars that only appear in a selected token overlay that make it convenient for the player to track them without cluttering up the token any further. Likewise could have other relatively simple overlay features such as an AC tracker and a Passive Perception tracker. Opening this up to be a feature within Roll20 could also allow for a decent amount of customization in said overlays, both on the GM level and on the player level, and could possibly open up a new modding venue for those with the capability to mod scripts and sheets and the like. While we're on the topic of the selected token overlay, it would probably also be rather convenient to add in a "collapse" feature like the toolbar has now, possibly on each major "section" of the overlay individually in fact. So you can have say AC and Passive Perception visible but collapse your extra Resource Bars and your Token Actions when you're not using them actively so you can get a better view of the game scene. The overlay could also be set up to interface with the card decks too now that I think of it, allowing you to assign cards to specific tokens/characters instead of just the player in specific. This would also potentially allow for things like item cards to be designed by GMs and could be given to a character and just traded from character to character with little need to edit a sheet directly, because it can be somewhat cumbersome when you toss a strange magical weapon over to an ally real quick mid-fight because of one reason or another since now the other player needs to either manually write out macros in the chat or add new attacks to the sheet and new inventory and that can slow down organic gameplay. One of my favorite live game rules was having everyone itemize what's in their loot on their sheet but also write up index cards with major or important items just so they can be passed around if need be. And both a GM I played with and I in my own games would hand out rare and valuable loot written on index cards like that too. The WotC even created item cards and similar features for multiple editions that made that super convenient! If anyone else has anything to contribute to this idea feel free. I think the selected token overlay has a lot of unused potential sitting in it and it would be really neat for all games if it was expanded upon.
