Is it possible to use the link feature in the handout to open a character (monster)? I have tried [Kobold] but it goes to a page and says "page not found". Does the character (monster) need to be in the journal or the compendium?
If it's a character in your game, it should work. I thought it just worked automatically, but if the link isn't working, check and make sure the link has "character" instead of "handout" in the url.
I believe it needs to be in the Journal. So if you drag the creature out of the compendium to get it added as a journal entry you should be able to do the [Goblin Warrior] bracket method
