Detailed description of the problem
I am encountering a bug in Roll20 related to the D&D 5e (2014) character sheet roll templates. The issue does not happen at the moment the roll is made. Rolls generated from the character sheet appear normally at first, but after refreshing the page , Roll20 starts showing multiple red error boxes in chat with the message: “An Error occurred while rendering this roll template.” From what I can tell, Roll20 fails when trying to re-render previously posted roll template messages from the D&D 5e (2014) sheet after the page reloads. The problem seems to affect the display of existing sheet-generated rolls already present in chat history. Minimum number of steps to reproduce the problem
Open a Roll20 game using the D&D 5e (2014) character sheet .
Make one or more rolls from the character sheet.
Confirm the rolls appear in chat.
Refresh the page.
After the page reloads, check the chat.
Roll20 shows red error messages saying:
“An Error occurred while rendering this roll template.”
Description of setup
Browser + Version: Chrome, latest version
Browser Addons/Extensions: None enabled
Operating System: Windows 11
Bug Triage Results
I carefully went through the recommended troubleshooting steps:
Step 1: Make sure to use the right browser
I tested the issue in both Chrome and Firefox , and it happens in both browsers.
Step 2: Ensure there are no extensions/addons interfering with Roll20
I tested with no add-ons or extensions enabled , and the issue still occurs.
Step 3: Clear your cache
I cleared the browser cache and tested again, and the problem still persists.
Results from steps 1–3
The issue persists after testing in both Chrome and Firefox, with no extensions enabled, and after clearing cache. I also tested with and without hardware acceleration , and the problem still occurs in both cases. This does not seem to be related to the act of making the roll itself, but rather to Roll20 trying to render existing D&D 5e (2014) sheet roll templates when the page and chat history are reloaded. Step by step reproduction instructions
Launch Roll20 and enter the affected game.
Open a character that uses the D&D 5e (2014) character sheet .
Make one or more rolls directly from the sheet.
Refresh the browser page.
Once the game reloads, look at the previous roll entries in chat.
Instead of rendering properly, Roll20 displays one or more red error boxes with the message:
“An Error occurred while rendering this roll template.”
Your computer settings
Web browser name and version: Chrome, latest version
Operating system: Windows 11
If JavaScript is enabled: Yes
If hardware acceleration is enabled: Tested both enabled and disabled
List of any browser add-ons/extensions enabled: None
Console log from the moment the page was accessed through when the issue was encountered
I have not included console logs yet, but I can provide them if needed. I am attaching screenshots showing the rendering errors appearing in chat after refreshing the page. Supplemental information
This does not appear to be caused by normal chat messages or by the act of rolling itself. The rolls were made from the D&D 5e (2014) character sheet , and the error only becomes visible after refreshing the page , when Roll20 attempts to display those previous roll results again. Because of that, this seems to be specifically a roll template rendering issue on page reload/chat history render , rather than a problem with the initial roll generation. También te dejo una versión más natural y breve, por si prefieres que suene más como un post real de foro: Title: D&D 5e (2014) sheet rolls throw roll template errors after page refresh I’m getting a bug with the D&D 5e (2014) character sheet in Roll20. The rolls themselves seem to work when they are first made, but after I refresh the page , previous sheet-generated rolls in chat stop rendering correctly and I get multiple red boxes saying: “An Error occurred while rendering this roll template.” So the problem does not happen when clicking the roll button itself. It happens when Roll20 reloads the page and tries to display those older roll template entries again. Steps to reproduce:
Open a game using the D&D 5e (2014) sheet
Make one or more rolls from the sheet
Refresh the page
Check chat
Previously posted sheet rolls now show the red roll template rendering error
Setup:
Chrome, latest version
Also tested in Firefox
Windows 11
No extensions/add-ons enabled
Cache cleared
Tested with and without hardware acceleration
The issue happens in both browsers, with no add-ons, after clearing cache, and regardless of hardware acceleration. This looks like a problem with re-rendering 5e 2014 sheet roll templates from chat history after page refresh , not with the original roll itself.
I’m attaching screenshots and can provide console logs if needed.
