What do your groups usually play while waiting for everyone to join? – A question from the GameHiHe project

Hi everyone, I’m currently helping with a browser game project called GameHiHe , and part of what I do involves testing a lot of short casual games that can be played directly in the browser. While doing that, I noticed something that made me curious about tabletop groups. In some of the online sessions I’ve joined before, there’s usually a 10–20 minute period where a few players are already there, but everyone is still waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. Most of the time we just chat, check character sheets, or sit around until the session officially starts. Since I’ve been testing quick games for GameHiHe lately, I started wondering whether small browser games could actually work well during that waiting time. Some of them only take a few minutes, don’t require installation, and are simple enough that people can stop immediately once everyone is ready. At the same time, I’m not sure whether this would actually be fun for a tabletop group or just become a distraction before the main game starts. So I wanted to ask people here: Do your groups normally play anything while waiting for everyone to join? Do you prefer just chatting, or have you found any quick games or activities that work especially well before a campaign starts?
Just like you said some of my players have been timely on the regular, and then there are some who show up a few minutes late at times. I figure it is a good time for players to just shoot the shiznit, as it can cut down on out of session chatter in the middle of the game. Last DnD session I let them go for a half hour just because they seemed to enjoy the chit chat, and I am grateful, at least currently, for having a decent size group of people I enjoy for my game. I am also kind of a party guy. I think some general pre session chatter without rolling dice or worrying about game mechanics or whatever is healthy for a group. Make us feel like friends though we are really just voices on the internet. I am more of a mind to find some short rules light thing to do on an evening we are missing important players and everybody still feels like playing something.
Every group I've ever been a part of just talks, jokes, and hangs out casually until the game session starts. I've never been involved with a group that plays mini-games to kill the time, or anything like that. It's probably not something I would be interested in, personally speaking, but others might be.
