What is a good game someone should play if they have never played a tabletop before?

But...gnome inventors can....awwwww, never mind. :-)
I'm a real fan of Chaosium's BRP (Basic Role Playing) system. It's used for Call of Cthulhu but also Stormbringer, Superworld and Ringworld. I've used it for a modern campaign as well. It pretty much just drops into any flavour genre you like. It's also very easy to learn... PLUS, your gnome could be an inventor if he wished!:)

Yeah, we might have some trouble explaining the Basic RolePlaying to the players of today, with their elaborate rolls, keep 5's and 6's, penalties on 1. We would say, "Hey! A percentage chance. Roll at or under it!" and they wouldn't get it! I played a massive 6-month game of RINGWORLD, played CALL OF CTHULHU and some RUNEQUEST (Avalon Hill, gorgeous 3rd edition). There is a "quick-start" condensed edition of the BRP rules (with some tongue-in-cheek scenarios like "rescue the Princess from the bad starbase" included) downloadable for free: http://basicroleplaying.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=307
So...Easy to learn... Adaptable...AND FREE?

Basic Fantasy Roleplaying system is a rules-light game system modeled on the classic RPG rules of the early 1980's. Though based loosely on the d20 SRD v3.5, Basic Fantasy RPG has been written largely from scratch to replicate the look, feel, and mechanics of the early RPG game systems. It is suitable for those who are fans of "old-school" game mechanics. Basic Fantasy RPG is simple enough for children in perhaps second or third grade to play, yet still has enough depth for adults as well. What Does It Cost? Nothing. It is all downloadable for free on the download pages or you can go to lulu, amazon, or createspace to purchase it at cost. No profit is made on them.

Yes, but Basic Fantasy Roleplaying is not to be confused with Chaosium Inc.'s Basic RolePlaying. BRP is much older and apart from the quickstart .pdf and things, is not free.

Dereck j. said: Hi, I'm a bit new. I've tried to get in a few games , but so far no luck. What game should I try to get into? Dave D. said: I'd say any game - I don't think there are any bad games for beginners. As long as you realize that it's more about social interaction than a rules system, any game is going to provide at least useful comparisons to determine what you like and don't like down the road. I would say that the OP (Dereck J) got his answer from Dave D. All the rest of this talk about this system or that system is just fluff. This could easily spiral into a flamewar if someone gets their feathers ruffled.
56 answers from clearly, very knowledgeable players and GM's are fluff? "Any game..." is certainly an answer but it is by no means the only answer. People here seem to be responsible enough to discuss their fave systems without any flaming or ruffling though I appreciate and understand your concern about it Metro!

Fluff to me means : The filler conversation you do either when getting to know someone or when there is a pause in the conversation that makes people feel awkward enough to talk about the weather which to this community is tossing game systems. We have been lucky that everyone that has responded has been very responsible and that is one of the things that makes this such a great site. I didn't mean to put down any of the preceding posts. I guess I have to be careful no toss in slang that is in common usage to me but might not be to others.
John Reyst has done a lot of hard work putting up several websites which share the free information about numerous systems with all the web. One of his projects I'd like to plug is www.d20herosrd.com for the free portions of the Mutants and Masterminds Third Edition system. It's supposed to be about western style comic book super heroes adventures. As such it is pretty nearly a universal system as long as the impressive feats are somewhat over the top. If you do not understand exponential growth, I would advise you to stay clear. I recommend the system in general, not sure if it is any better or any worse than any other system for a first time player.

I gotta sing the praise of Fate Accelerated Edition . It's $5 for the rulebook and 40 pages of pretty simple rules. Great to get your feet wet with, especially if you're like me and HATE reading rulebooks.
