Carlos woke up to his alarm clock he turned it off and pulled the covers from him, the soft hum of the electric blanket withered as he deactivated the power-cell. The blanket floated away from him towards the metallic walls surrounding him. His room lush and well kitted out, with power cells food packets ship suits and oxygen canisters. He floats over to his wardrobe and pulls out a uniform tossing a few old clothes aside as they float away in the zero G environment, a clear waste of power in this ship.
He smiles to himself as he holds the clothes he found and buttons himself into a captain uniform, he looks at himself in the mirror, scruffy with a moustache and oil stained hair, but nevertheless a pristine suit, the sign of an officer. He continues over to a tool belt and cleaning fluids hooking them onto himself and grabbing a mop.
He attached a small re-breather device to his face and heads to the sealed door he stops for a moment before opening the door Another day, they'll be hear soon enough. The door swooshes open and he seals it behind him, securing the air locks in place. ''Air in hear is still low, breathable, but not ideal, they better come soon'' They'll be hear, trust me, we're close now.
He hovers down the corridors, the empty halls, equipment floating around, dim lights flashing occasionally. He opens a hatch taking him to the bridge, no one is present, it's dark, his flash light illuminates the way as he heads to a small computer isolated from the rest of the system. He plugs in a power cell and the system boots to life with green text before him. He keys in a few commands and waits for the results. ''Nothing, nothing on long range sensors, our distress call is barely making it into subspace, there's no chance anyone knows where we are''
Patient, the message got through, it was sent a week ago, it'll take longer because of the low power, but the owners of the ship will have got it by now.
Carlos scoffs and unplugs the computer power supply and heads to other terminals activating them, taking some notes and then deactivating them.
''Bridge systems nominal, hull integrity surprisingly okay, life support sub nominal, and it's bloody cold.''
He moves out of the bridge and into other rooms cleaning, fixing things and generally just being a janitor for several hours until he makes it to a cargo hold, a massive hold, fully of junk components, he plugs a small battery into a toy he built and plays with it for a while, flying it in and out of the scrap piles until it dies and falls to the ground. He goes to pick it up and catches glimpse of the object he's been following for years and has seen everday. A statue, a statue of a man.
''Good afternoon , how are we today. Fine.. great, wanna play some cards?''
He deals some cards to himself and the statue.
The statue is silent and still the cards facedown on the ground, Carlos is looking intently at his waiting. He looks up to the statue ''Got any 3's?''
He waits
minutes pass
''Dang'' He picks up a card from the pile.
Minutes pass yet again
Carlos sighs, ''How do you always know''
He passes over 2 2's to the statue.
''Ahhah you didn't get that one, go Fish'' Carlos chuckles to himself
the statue vacant and emotionless
''Come on, go fish''
Still nothing, All of a sudden, a card from the top of the deck floats up and moves gently over to the statue's cards face down.
The game continues for several hours, slowly, Until Carlos stands up angrily and pushes at some wreckage, it moves about 20ft across the room.
He looks over surprised
You forget your power Carlos. ''I apologise'' He continues on the res tof the day until he tires himself out and returns to bed.
''Well that was fun, let's hope they get here tomorrow''
Five years, you still have to master patience.
