Image Library access for Player Profiles and Character Sheets

November 20 (10 years ago)
Good day,

I have recently received notification that I had reached my limit for the Library. As a player, I have been changing my profile pic to match whichever game character I had been currently playing. What I did not realize was that each time I did so, I was adding an additional copy of the same image to the Library. In my ignorance, I deleted a campaign I was working on to increase space, but of course (in hindsight), it did not affect my Library size.

My suggestion would be to allow access to the Image Library for players in the Profile pics and Character Sheets to reduce the unnecessary duplication of images. That is, of course, unless the option already exists and I just don't know what I'm doing. In that case, I would suggest that the option be idiot-proofed so that I could quit wasting space on the server. :)

Thank you for your attention, and the good work y'all have been doing here.

Hi Rhus. There's something to your suggestion there. I think part of that is a known issue where lots of people are having that duplicating issue, and another part of that might just need to be idiot-proofed like you said (needs better labeling in the user interface to tell the user how to grab from their library rather than hitting the more obvious Upload).

Part of your suggestion I think you can already do but it always confuses me too so I don't want to mis-type it, but I believe it's the Character portrait that you can drag-and-drop from your existing Library, but the Player avatar that (unfortunately) must be uploaded again to switch it out. This might be backwards. Gauss can explain it better, if you ask same question again in Specific Questions forum, or direct message the Moderator Gauss on here, or search for your issue on the forums, this has been asked before. Also I'll hit this post back, after I experiment with it again and get my understanding in order.

Here is the latest Question post where Gauss answered how to do it (for Character portrait.... still not for Player avatar),

Rhus, if you remember the name of your campaign and the date you deleted it the Devs may be able to retrieve it for you.

Instead of re-uploading the same image each time use the art library sidebar to reuse images in Characters, Cards, etc.

Also, you can see your storage quota here: https://app.roll20.net/account

Regarding the Player avatar, is there a reason you are changing it regularly?

Some people like the "Player avatar" slot to match their character in that game, so that your Character pic appears at the bottom of the screen doing the talking. Rhus mentioned that in the first post where he wrote, "As a player, I have been changing my profile pic to match whichever game character I had been currently playing."

Thank you Gauss, but it's not a big deal. I appreciate the info though.

Now that I've been made aware of the Library, I'm using it. It just didn't click (in my head) as it should have. Perhaps a direct link to your Image Library in the Upload area may help?

As Gold said, I had been changing my Player Avatar to match my in-game tokens. That was before I realized I had to go back to manually delete each one I used in the past year.

I had also been unable to use the Drag and Drop option, probably out of sheer laziness of not taking the time to look up how, so have been using the Upload Image button as the path of least resistance.

Rhus, here is a different suggestion thread that's got more votes. Perhaps you can add your +1 to this other related suggestion too:

https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1245756/unique-p...

"Unique portraits for each game", the suggestion is asking for a feature where the Player can display a different pic at the bottom (webcam position) for each campaign you're in.

Thank you, Gold.

Unfortunately, I still have not found how to access the Image Library as a player. As a GM, I can do so, otherwise the only option is to upload again if using the same image in another game. The Art Library button does not show if you are not a GM in a specific campaign.

I am very glad I found this, this has been bugging me. I'd keep uploading character tokens, dropping them in game, configuring them with attributes... then trying to set the avatar from art library, finding no easy way, then going and deleting the first version in art library so I could reupload it onto the avatar 'properly'.

Interesting note: Dragging from the art library to the Avatar "upload a file" field in the "Edit character" box only drops the image in if you're using the Art Library sidebar tab, it doesn't work with the "Your Library" box you get from clicking on the star on the Art Library sidebar tab. If you try, that drops a token on the map behind the "Edit character" box. Quite confusing.

I'd recommend adding another "choose file" button, and renaming them to clarify that one is for uploading files from your computer and the other is for choosing a file from your art library... though that might be some rough UI work. Even easier, a 'set avatar from default token' button would solve this just as well, provided you could successfully yank the right file out of a rollable table.

Speaking of rollable tables, the same trick works here for inserting art library files rather than reuploading! This suggests there are more cases I haven't thought of (cards is the next obvious one), so it may be worth streamlining the process of getting art library to "upload file" fields in general.
