House Rules

In general we will follow the Basic Fantasy RPG Core Rulebook . However, there will be a few aspects of the game in which we deviate from those rules, or where we adopt a particular optional rule, or where we extend the ruleset. To ensure consistency, I will try to summarise all these ‘house rules’ in this topic. The page numbers refer to the relevant section of the BFRPG rule book (3rd Edition, release 98). I’ll update this topic as the game progresses, but my intention for this game is to keep house rules to an absolute minimum. Character Creation Character abilities (p4). Having rolled 3d6 in order for Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution and Charisma, characters may interchange one pair of ability scores. Starting languages (p4) . Those characters with an intelligence bonus above 13 are free to choose their additional language. Money & Equipment (p10-12) . Each character starts with the following: - Their choice of armour (and/or shield) in keeping with their class. - Their choice of one melee weapon. - Their choice of one missile weapon + a reasonable quantity of ammunition (e.g. one full quiver or bolt case). - Pack A (below) + 20gp ... OR ... Pack B (below) + 17 gp ... OR ... Pack C (below) + 6 gp Pack A (22 lbs) - Backpack - Iron Spikes x 12 - Lantern - Oil Flasks x 2 - Rations, 1 week - Sack, Large - Tinderbox - Waterskin Pack B (36 lbs) - Backpack - Mirror - Oil Flasks x 3 - Pole, 10' - Rations, 1 week - Rope, Hemp, 50' - Sack, Large x 2 - Tinderbox - Torches x 6 - Waterskin Pack C (23 lbs) - Backpack - Holy Symbol ... OR ... Holy Water, Vial x 3 ... OR ... Spellbook ... OR ... Thieves' Tools - Iron Spikes x 12 - Rations, 1 week - Rope, Hemp, 50' - Sack, Small x 4 - Waterskin The Adventure Experience points (p42, p153). Experience points will be awarded for monsters defeated. Experience points can also be "purchased" through training at a cost of 1 GP = 1 XP. The time taken to complete such training is 1 week per target experience level (e.g. any training undertaken by a character working towards their 3rd level will take three weeks). The Encounter We will use the Basic Fantasy " Combat with Floor Plans " supplement to resolve combat using Roll20.
Clarification of Magic-User Spell Acquisition Based on page 151 of the Basic Fantasy Core Rulebook: 1. If a Magic-User has ready access to the spell to be acquired (e.g. another friendly Magic-User that already knows the spell, or another Magic-User's spell book), then the cost to acquire the spell is 500 gp per spell level. 2. If a Magic-User has no ready access to the spell, then they will need to pay someone to teach them it. The cost of this training is 100 - 1000 gp per spell level (in addition to the 500 gp per spell level above).
