Unfortunately Luke was unable to join due to a
prior commitment.
Starting with a recap of the previous sessions,
we started off with leaving Kritty to nurse his wounds.
Tearing a sconce from the wall, Rothuk led the
group through the crypt. As they moved, they filled Gaffer in on what they’ve
done so far. Exploring the crypt itself more fully with the barbarian stopping
to try to break down a trapped door with almost no success. After giving up,
they moved on down the hallway and come face to face with the other side of the
blocked door back to the entryway as well as two others.
They took the door on the right, Rothuk threw
it open only to get shot in the chest with a crossbow bolt. Brought to a rage the
barbarian, it drove him to smash the crossbow. Not satisfied with that, he then
proceeded to tear the lid from a chest as the rest searched for more
information. Enarit, the Shadow Elf, was naturally drawn to the perfume box on
the end table. Gaffer searched the notes on the desk. Ulf used his senses to
attempt to discern any magical items. And Rothuk used his axe to break into a
secret compartment in the chest. It was full of three things, a silver comb
that the barbarian claimed for personal grooming, a pouch of. . . leather that
was full of coins, and a journal penned by the undertaker.
Ulf, doing some speed-reading of the journal,
learned that it was one actually of the ill-advised hobbies of the Janos
Barnes, the undertaker. Detailing his life, it revealed that he was a
Corpse-Eater and that he had moved in a while ago, having eaten enough humans
in his lifetime to eventually pass for one himself, even being able to avoid
magical detection. While scanning the books, he managed to notice a bit of
writing in the margins of the book detailing the passcode to deactivate the
trap on the southern door.
Following a quick discussion about the
revelations that had been unveiled to Ulf’s prying eyes, he led them to the
southern door and into the Crypt beyond.
A well maintained room, exquisitely tiled with
multiple sarcophagi along the walls with a mosaic laid into the floor, moving
further in is a great dais, flanked by great stone statues with a single,
lidless sarcophagus in the center. Lying on blue silk, a skeleton that almost rivals
Rothuk’s height rests, but not in peace as they discovered when they approached
the dais.
“THIEVES!”
Roared the nearly-transparent specter that
flickered into existence above the skeleton and cursed at them in rage. Accusing
them of thievery and demanding his amulet back that was stolen. Singling out
Gaffer as being able to tell about it as he was one of those that knew it.
Perhaps death clouding his eyes only for that moment of clarity. Promising to
return as they backed out of the room, the dreadful vision dissipated back into
thin air that it came from.
With the group now looking to find an amulet,
and search the rest of the crypt, Ulf asked Gaffer to explain right at the same
time that Rothuk triggered an ambush of Skull Spiders. Only the barbarian and the
scout managed to score hits on the spiders. One of Enarit’s arrows actually
forcing a one of the foes to retreat, if only for a while in the narrow
confines of the room.
It did not take long, and with the constructs
stomped to death and crushed to utter dust, Gaffer finally answered Ulf’s
question.
He was on a pilgrimage, to see a great
barbarian hero. In this case it was Azar, the hero that slew the demon of old
all those years ago was also a hero to the Ratkin. His strange affinity for the
rats in particular as well as his heroic deeds had turned his burial site into,
over the years, a pilgrimage site for Ratkin. He explained to the group that
the amulet itself was a large, crescent shaped bauble, that it had appeared
that way in all the stories and the paintings and statutes that he had seen.
But he also revealed that he knew that the crypt itself wasn’t limited to a
single floor.
As the group had learned in their research, the
great hero Azar rests in the under-crypt. However Gaffer didn’t know how to
actually access that level, and he isn’t even sure if he wanted to from what he
has seen in the just the first level.
With his story told, and the explanation, the
group decided that for now it was good enough. They turned back and left the
crypt, pulling a few things with them.
Now the question come: How do they access the
under-crypt and quell the unquiet spirit? What is with the urn that Ulf
insisted they take with them to analyze? Might the journal that Janos wrote
hold the key to all of this mess? And if not, could Johnathon supply the
answers that they need?
