Is the workaround of downloading the token and having the GM upload and use it verboten? The basic answer is yes, the GM should buy the token pack(s). It involves inconvenient or wasteful workarounds for the Player to do the purchase directly. It is NOT verboten, but rather is perfectly allowed, for the Player to buy items from the Marketplace like tokens, download & send to your GM for uploading, if the Marketplace offering (token pack) has Downloading enabled. Some items in Marketplace do not have downloading enabled, and those it is correct they are 'verboten' to DL and email. This decision is the artist/seller's decision I believe, and many or most token packs I've seen so far are download-enabled, so that process is allowed. The one exception or workaround, GenKitty is correct that the Player can do the process for one token & one token only, per game (per character that the player controls a journal for), by exploiting the undocumented feature wherein Player can put their own Portrait, and then Portrait can be dragged to the tabletop from which GM can convert the drag-and-dropped graphic into a Token. What I find wasteful about this process is, the Player will be purchasing a whole Token pack if they're buying (single tokens are not sold). They would buy a whole token pack & would only be able to drop ONE of those tokens onto the tabletop. The GM and other players still wouldn't have access to the companion tokens, unless the purchaser does the process of Download (where permitted/enabled), email, GM re-uploads. The workarounds work, but in the long run, for making a habit, it usually makes the most sense for the GM to buy the Marketplace products / token packs. There is a Suggestion on the Suggestions forum for letting players/people give a Marketplace donation / gift certificate to your GM, which would allow the Player to more-easily request and pay for the tokens they want.
